A recent health insurance survey has revealed that more than 9 million American adults lost their health insurance coverage due to job loss in the previous year, 2010. The Commonwealth Fund 2010 Biennial Health Insurance Survey estimates that almost 57 percent of people in the country lost their insurance due to the recession.

The report further indicates that unemployed people find it very difficult to get affordable health insurance. Of the estimated 9 million working adults that lost their health insurance last year, only 25 percent of them have been able to receive health coverage from another source. Another 14 percent were able to receive coverage through COBRA, a government program that provides health and other insurance coverage for the unemployed.

Modern medicine is making strides in the use of internet and social networking technology to help doctors connect with patients. Many health-care providers are turning to Facebook, Twitter, and text messaging in order to market their practice and share health information.

For example, many plastic surgeons are starting professional Facebook pages to get the word out about their practices. They say that the recommendations that people give on Facebook can translate into new business for them. Many of these sites feature before-and-after videos, as well as special offers. They also allow doctors a chance to answer patient questions by email or to follow-up by phone. There are even specialized internet marketing companies that are emerging to cater to physicians who want to set up a professional online presence. The American Medical Association also published guidelines for the use of social media last year.

Recent health information statistics show that the abuse of opioids, specifically OxyContin pills, is the fastest growing form of addiction in Canada. It is easy for many addicts to be in denial about this form of drug addiction. As one 20 year old OxyContin addict explained, he didn't realize he was addicted to the drug until he found himself becoming mentally obsessed with it, constantly fantasizing about being on drugs.

He had started taking the prescription drug recreationally with a friend, after his friend's mom had had a stroke and the boys raided her painkiller prescription. He said that for him the pills made him feel socially accepted and seemed to solve all his problems, but it soon became an unhealthy obsession, as it does for many people. Other commonly misused prescription drugs include oxycodone, hydrocodone, codeine, morphine, hydromorphone and meperidine.
