What to Do When Your Child Has IBS

© freeparkingChildren who suffer from IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) are twice as likely to have a parent who has the same illness. Most colicky infants have parents who suffer from IBS or acid reflux, too.
There's usually frequent pain in the abdomen accompanied by alternating episodes of constipation and diarrhea. Most incidents of IBS take place during a child's school years, but colic may occur earlier on.
Children with IBS also go through emotional episodes like flare ups. You may find it difficult to make them go to school or even attend other children's parties.
If IBS is suspected in your child, consult your pediatrician immediately. IBS can usually be handled with some minor lifestyle changes like avoiding some food, adding yogurt to your child's diet or teaching a child some stress management techniques. Be sure to have your doctor rule out more serious illnesses like inflammatory bowel disease.
