User Feedback: ACUVUE OASYS® Brand Contact Lenses
Filed in archive Cases on May 11, 2007
The use of new-generation silicone- hydrogel lenses (senofilcon-A) can alleviate some problems that contact lens wearers suffer like dry, tired eyes and other related symptoms: I mentioned this in my post about ACUVUE OASYS® Brand Contact Lenses with HYDRACLEAR™ Plus.
But the users said otherwise. I got tremendous response on this product from people who have used ACUVUE OASYS® and they all complained about "allergic reactions" to senofilcon-A manifested by dryness, itching, waking up with "glue-eyes", light sensitivity and deteriorated vision.
Some of them though were relieved with the Oasys-related problems when asked to switch to Acuvue-2.
I wanna thank all these commenters for their feedback.
And I thought wearing contact lenses should be easy...
Finding a brand you won't be allergic to and religiously following contact lens hygiene for starters are stuff you have to discuss closely with your ophthalmologist or optometrist.

My son (contact wearer for the past 5 years) is having a terrible time with the Acuvue Oasys lenses. They suddenly slide around and get foggy - creating a hazardous situation if he is driving at the time. The lenses last only a couple days.

I've had similar allergic reactions to the Acuvue oasis lenses. I finally figured it out by reading others' comments on this blog when I googled "Acuvue oasis allergic." Thank you. I've spent several hundred dollars treating with an ophthal-mologist, using different eye drop prescriptions and even time off work. Is anyone thinking class action here?

My son has been wearing contacts for 3 years (Biomedics 55). He just had an eye exam and is trying the Oasys lenses. I'm very concerned after reading the comments here, so will be keeping a close eye on him. However, I came across some information which indicates that the choice of solution may be a contributing factor to these problems. Here's the link: http://staininggrid.com/blog.aspx

I have been wearing the Acuvue Oasys contacts for 4 months. Over the past 4 months I have had an increase in blurred vision and now find myself with almost complete vision loss. After 2 months of misdiagnosis (pink eye)from 2 DR.'s the 3rd has now diagnosed me with Keratitis from these lenses. I can't see, read, drive, and I have 2 small children at home. This has altered my life and I am extremely frustrated. I have no idea when my vision will even return. I am also considering legal action. I would not recommend these contacts to anyone!!!

I've always loved Acuvue 2 (Acuvue advanced just never seemed to fit me right - always felt like something was in my eye, etc), and I also love Acuvue Oasys. If I get tired and forget to take them out, I don't have to worry about it. The only difference is that I have to be more careful when I take them in and out - they seem delicate. Otherwise, remember that not everyone is allergic. You would assume that if someone was suffering from a recent eye irration/problem, any qualified doctor would first switch their solution and contact lenses (at least to what they were using prior) to rule out allergic reactions, etc before ordering expensive labs. I wouldn't blame acuvue for bad medicine.

I just switched to these from a different brand, and have started having serious problems. My eyes were bloodshot for weeks on end and then got infected (pink eye). Didn't use them for a week then the first day I tried them again, total bloodshot eyes.
If you're trying these out and have irritation or bloodshot eyes, don't pass it off as just new contacts or you need to get used to them because it may get worse, not better.

I went to see my doctor after having problems with corneal ulcers (most likely due to wearing my contacts for too long, not cleaning them properly, or having them fit my eyes too tightly), and once the ulcers were cleared up, I was allowed to wear contacts again. My doctor had me fitted with the Acuvue Oasys lenses to allow more movement over my eyes (since they're dry) and thought they would fit better. I would wear them for less than a week, then have severe red eyes, mostly a ring around the iris. I would take them out, use a steroid drop which would clear them up, then put new ones in, only to have it happen again after a couple of days. I keep going back to the doctor to find out what the problem is, especially because before the ulcers, I've never experienced anything like this, and would wear my contacts every single day. I was wearing O2 Optix before, and liked them although I think they were a little tight. After seeing my doctor a few times, he told me I simply have dry eyes and a slight intolerance to contacts - no infections of other underlying problems. I've been wearing contacts for 10 years, and it just seems odd to me that all of a sudden when I started wearing the Acuvue Oasys, I become "intolerant". After having read all of these comments, I'm going back to my doctor to ask him if an allergy to the Oasys is a possibility, because all signs seem to be pointing to that. I don't think that the Acuvue Oasys are necessarily a BAD lens, I just think there are some people allergic to them, and therefore cannot wear the silicone-hydrogel lenses. I am apparently one of them. If anyone has any words of advice to has experience something similar, please share.

I went from regular Acuvue lenses to Acuvu Oasys about 8 months ago. I thought they were so much more comfortable that any others I have worn and for monovision. Recently, I have noticed that I just can't get the clarity for my distance. I have tried new contacts from different boxes just to be sure, but it's almost like I have the wrong prescription or something, but I know the boxes are labeled by the factory. I've had to go back to my glasses as just can't see road signs to drive. I have worn contacts for 30+ years, but have not experienced anything like this. I hate wearing bifocals! I don't know what to do. That's why I thought of checking to see if others are reporting something similar.

I also switched to the Oasys contacts, and have had a lot of problems. I just went to the doctor, and she told me I have keratitis (swelling of the corneas). I am wondering if it is from an allergy to the lenses. My symptoms are sensitivity to light, blurry vision, dry eyes, and some itchiness/watering eyes. I have to only wear glasses for a week to see if the swelling will go down.

My eye doc took me out of my Night & Day lenses and told me that Oasis was a better lens. I have been wearing contacts for over 10 years and rarely had a problem. Let me say that these lenses are the worst lenses I have ever worn hands down. I called my eye doctor and he said i should stick with it. wore the lens on and off for 3 weeks and felt like ripping my eyes out. i understand the doctor wanting me to try this lens, but he was very reluctant to listen to me. anyway, i sucked it up, went to another eye doctor and he put me back in my night and days, which ironically, i find to be the most comfortable lens that i have worn. after reading this, it seems i am not alone in my dissatisfaction with this lens.

I have been having tons of problems with Oasys. I have been back and forth to the eye doctor ever since. I kept thinking it's my eyes--never thought to blame the contacts. Recently I switched eye doctors and he mentioned that many folks are allergic to the silicone. I am happy to have found this site--all the symptoms others here have complained of due to these lenses are the same symptoms I have. The lenses are going in the trash and I am going to try something else--after my eyes get better again.

Last month I purchased a one year supply of the Acuvue Oasys and I have had problems ever since. Whenever I wear the contacts my vision becomes very foggy within 1 hour of having them on. At fidt I thought I accidently got soap in my eye. So put on a brand new pair and the same thing happened but this time I had burning in my eyes. I had to pray all the way home because my vision was so cloudy I could not see. I am returning the contact on tomorrow.

I wore Acuvue 2 contacts for 8 years before switching to Oasys. After about 2 months of wearing them, my eyes began to get very dry and my contacts were sticky. Shortly after that, my eyes became bloodshot and very dry. I wore my glasses for weeks until it cleared up. My doctor switched me back to Acuvue 2, and the redness is gone. However, the dry eye problem is still affecting me, and I have decreased vision, especially at distances. I am scared that these contacts may have caused permanent damage.

So glad to have found this site, I thought it was just me having problems with the Oasys contacts. I've been a lens wearer for 15+ years and these are by far the most irritating, uncomfortable lenes I've ever worn. I do not sleep in mine, but I find I have to put a new pair in about every 2 days otherwise my eyes feel like they're being scratched and the lenses feel like they are suctioned on. I've tried these for the last 9 months, I'll be asking my doc to switch me back to the Advanced.

My eye doctor recently switched me to Acuvue Advanced Astig. for my left eye and Oasys for my right eye after having worn Hydron Zero 4 lenses without any problems for over 25 years. I felt that my vision in my right eye was getting blurred by the end of the day and I was also having some irritation which my doctor said was a small scratch on my cornea (I have no idea how I got that). After using medication to clear up that problem I decided to switch back to the Zero 4 again just for my right eye and no longer have any problems. But I continue to wear the new lens, 14 day disposable, in my left eye. I now have terribile itiching in that eye along with some tearing and burning. Thanks to this blog it looks like I will be going back to the Zero 4 lens in my left eye.

Hi, I can't believe this. I am using the Oasys lenses also. I just had to drive home for a 25 minute commute with the lenses on and I wanted to claw my eyes out--I had only been wearing them for 8 hours. I have been wearing them for several months with increasing symptoms, mainly these symptoms peaked when on a few nights recently I slept in them for 2-4 hours. I generally do not sleep in the lenses, I keep them and my case very clean, and I change them as prescribed. Actually, I just went through a year supply in two months because they have been so irritating lately. I am going in to an eye doctor ASAP. I called my doctor last week complaining of noticable eye mucus secretion (for lack of better word) and it was attributed to a sinus drip I had, no visit probably needed I was told. I do think it could be an allergy; I had a skin contact allergy test run as a kid and in addition to many other things, my skin would blister with any adhesive--this actually wasn't part of the test, but everywhere a patch was adhered, I blistered. I am allergic to latex--so I don't see why someone couldn't have a silicone allergy. I looked up the types of pink eye on the internet and one is actually caused by a contact (meaning "in contact") dermatitis to a particular contact lens; you will have pink eye symptoms. I'll let you know what the doctor says.

Lenses out since my last post, saw an opthamologist today. The doctor did a test for eye tearing/lubricaton and I scored an 8, 10 and below is considered dry eye/insufficient lubrication. He said I have GPC-Giant papillary conjuctivitis (GPC)--not really pink eye from the virus but yes, the one I found on the internet noted in my last post--the one from contact lens use. Funny, I diagnosed myself correctly. He rejected the idea that I could be allergic to the silicone, rather he said it was the dry eye or an allergy to a protein deposit on the lens. It can't be the deposit because as I said in my last post, I have gone through a year's supply of lenses in two months--there was not time for "buildup". However, when I looked it up on the web it seems like doctors recognize that there is a cycle involved between dry eye and contact lenses, and it sounds like a case of not knowing whether the chicken or egg came first; which is the cause? Furthermore, upon a google search for GPC, I found a site that I thought was disturbing and interesting about all hydrogel lenses. This is a direct paste: "Hydrogel CLs appear to result in an overall prevalence of GPC of approximately 20%. Silicone hydrogel CLs may be more prone to GPC development, perhaps because of their mechanical stiffness or their higher propensity for deposition. Heat sterilization, poor cleaning, rough CL edges, and extended wearing times favor development of GPC. Increased frequency of CL replacement (especially daily disposables), rigorous cleaning (particularly with enzymes), peroxide disinfection, and decreased wear times appear to reduce the prevalence of GPC among users of hydrogel CLs. Rigid CL wear appears to result in a prevalence of approximately 5%; increased enzyme cleaning appears prophylactic." Anyway, I will not be wearing my lenses for four to six weeks, will be using steriod drops four times a day, and will follow up with my optometrist, per doctor's orders. He said my optometrist may do plugs or recommend drops depending on dryness at the check-up. I think Oasys and all hydrogels need to bring forth the facts, and in my opinion, doctors are abandoning patients and their oaths when they are in denial of so many compelling cases that call for serious consideration of this type of contact lens. The truth will lie in my next post--if my eyes improve and I can go on to wear my old brand of non-silicone lenses without discomfort, then I think I can deduce that the problem was likely the Oasys lens. I'll let you all know what happens.

I am age 53, worn soft contacts since 1973. Switched from Advance to Oasys 15 months ago; comfortable for about 7-8 months but increasingly dry and less comfortable since. I developed a "pink-eye" type of symptom about two months ago and my eyes would be quite tired only 4-6 hours after putting on the lenses. After a weekend without contacts, I tried a new pair of Acuvue 2 contacts with ReNu Multi. Whether it was the Opti Replenish or Oasys or both, today was my best contact lens day in months! Thank you for this site and information. I hope that I am on to something with this. I even contemplated refractive surgery in lieu of the discomfort and poor vision with Oasys.

I wore Frequency 55 for two years and than my doc deceided to switch me to Oasys. The first week of wearing them my eyes became extremly blood shot, dry and it felt like sand paper. The doc put me on Zylet to treat the problem. After treating it with this drop and taking the contacts out my eyes cleared up. I put the contacts back in and the same thing happen redness, etc. He put me on TobraDex. The redness cleared up. He than had the bright idea to put me on a larger diameter Oasys lense, the redness is back again today and it looks worse. I have my doctor appointment for the 5th time in two months and I am going to give him some of these comments and see what he has to say. Thank you to everyone who posted.

Payton again from the two previous posts. I am back in my older lens brand after a break from contacts, no problems. At first, even during the break while wearing glasses, I had a really tough time with light and glare. I think the Oasys lens must have done some temporary damage to my eye. If I would look at light, I seemed to have trouble focusing and there was haze around it. Anyway, I no longer have dry eye or irritation while wearing lenses now that I am out of the Oasys silicones, and the problem with light has subsided. It still irritates me that neither the ophthalmologist nor optometrist I saw ever really acknowledged it could have been a silicone allergy. Ironically, the ophthalmologist who also does laser surgeries was all to quick to mention that my solution for dry eye might be laser surgery if I didn't care to wear glasses, but (a brief disclaimer after his sales pitch) he would have see if I am a good candidate. Also, my optometrist didn't forewarn me of any other patients who had trouble with the Oasys lens before I made the decision although I was able to easily confirm it on the internet (see my second post with the direct quote from a scientific study). I figure there are sales reps. who are pushing the lenses in the offices without telling the whole story. It's pathetic how money is the incentive for these eye health professionals rather than the patient's wellbeing.

After my last exam (through Target's optical provider) the suggestion was that I could get more air to my eyes and have a more comfortable experience switching from Acuvue 2 to Oasis. I could have gotten a trial pair however the two gentlemen helping said they were very comfortable contacts. One was a teenager. The other said he couldn't wear them due to the red eye allergies, but if he could, he would. I have experienced all of the downsides mentioned here - lack of clarity for distance, haziness, glare, stickiness, etc. I found this post after purchasing the contacts. I was able to return the unopened sets for Acuvue 2 and I am so glad I made the switch back b/c my eyes are much more comfortable now. Always get the sample before switching brands - it will save a lot of running around in the long run. Oh, and by the way, when I returned them, yet a different person there said they were her favorite brand of contacts. I still await my $ for the difference in cost between the Oasis and the Acuvue 2s but I'm just very happy to have my old brand back. Ultimate goal, laser surgery, to help reduce or elimate contact lense usage.

I cannot believe how relieved I am to have found all of these posts! I began wearing Oasys about 3 years ago, and for the past 18 months or so I have experienced nothing but problems. I had a serious corneal infection that my eye Dr. intimated was due to abuse of my lenses when in fact I have always been scrupulous about their care and never wear them longer than 2 weeks. Since that infection, I have experienced light sensitivity, extreme itching, redness and irritation and an inability to wear the lens for more than a few hours before the irritation becomes unbearable. When I went to the Dr. last time, I was given a lens until my order of Oasys came in (one of the old style, floppy lenses) and it felt wonderful. I will never buy Oasys again and I am very upset with my eye Dr. for assuming that my symptoms were due to some fault of my own.

I am SO glad I found this article! I have been wearing contacts since I was 15 yrs old and never had a problem with them. (Even on the rare occasions when I slept in them). Now, I am 33 and I was switched into Acuvue OASYS lenses almost a year ago. Like all of the above stories I have experienced the sensation of the contact sliding across my eye, severe cloudiness of the lense (usually that's a symptom of the lense being old, but they were not), discharge in the corner of my eye every morning (thought I was getting pink eye), severe itchiness, light sensitivity, and YES these lenses are really hard to get out! I lose them in my eye constantly and it takes a very long time to find them, they're very thin. I was diagnosed by my doctor that because I hadn't been changing them regularly, or rubbing them sufficiently because I used a multi-purpose solution, that protein had built up under my lid which was causing the "dragging" sensation I was experiencing. And he thought that sleeping in them was the problem. I might sleep in my contacts 3 times a year if that. I constantly feel these lenses in my eyes...when I never would ever feel my old brand. Needless to say, I'm switching now to a new brand that doesn't have senofilcon. I also was told that my Renu-MultiPurpose Solution that I always have used could be the problem as well. So I'm starting everything new. And to think, I thought I was going to HAVE to wear my coke-bottle glasses!

Wow, I cant believe I found this post. I thought I was all alone. My experience with Acuvue Oasys contact lenses has ruined my life. About a year ago I switched from Proclear contact lenses to Oasys due to dryness issues with Proclear (some people find proclear comfortable or tolerable). Anyways, after about a week I developed GPC. I did not know what it was, but I had tears, sensitivity to light. Because I did not wear contacts I avoided social situations, and my girlfriend dumped me. My psychologist says that I have to accept wearing glasses, and I am starting to agree with him. Laser surgery is too dangerous, and why would one tamper permanently with one's eyes (even if the risk is low for complications). Ive even read about a college student who committed suicide after complications from Lasik. In any case, I am considering returning to glasses, rimless glasses. Or if someone develops contact lenses as comfortable as Proclear, but that doesnt dry up. I think everyone can agree Proclear is the most comfortable and sharp 2 week contact lenses. Now why cant they work on their formula, more oxygen and less dryness?

I have been wearing Acuvue advanced for years with no problems. 2 weeks ago my eye doc switched me to oasis. Within 2 days, my eyes were burning, foggy and really blurry. I don't sleep with them. I tried them again a few days later and they were causing problems within a few hours. I had the problem with them not coming out easily. I went back to the doc and he swithed me back to the advanced. No more burning, but one of my eyes still has blurriness with contacts and glasses. I think the contact did some damage. When I switched back to advance the doc said lots of people had the same complaint I had and switched back. that would have been nice to know ahead of time. when I get back home (I'm traveling) I will have to go have my blurrines checked out, I just hope it can be fixed or will go away.

I'm very glad to have found this site. I have worn Oasys lenses daily for nearly two years. The initial transition to Oasys was great; in fact I found them so comfortable that it felt like I wasn't even wearing them. Over the past year or so, however, I've had nothing but problems with my eyes, including blurriness, sticky lenses, "slippage," and the light-sensitivity that prompted me to do this search for other users' reactions. Accuvue's website claims they're great lenses for people who work at computers, yet I am most uncomfortable during the work day, dealing with the sensitivity to the overhead fluorescent lights and computer monitor, and the resultant headache. I was always been an avid reader, but have all but stopped due to eye discomfort. I have also limited my night driving. In my frustration about my vision problems, I decided three weeks ago to try to transition back to glasses and was very pleased with the results, having no light sensitivity, blurry vision, or general fogginess. I wore my contact lenses to work today though and am experiencing all the old, familiar discomfort. I am off to buy new frames tomorrow and can only hope that the damage is not reflected in my new prescription. Thank you all for your thoughtful posts.

I have been wearing contacts for 15 years and tried switching to the Acuvue Advance two years ago. My skin around my eyes became red and itchy. my skin would peel and it hurt. I tried skin creams and lotion thinking it was a skin allergy. Went back to my eye dr and told her. She immediately switched me to the Acuvue 2. Problem solved. Last year tried the Acuvue Advance for Astigimatism correction. Took the trial pair out after 2 hours and went back to eye dr. We switched back to the Acuvue 2 and wonderful. There must be something in the material that causes these types of reactions. Just tried Optix brand last week and same problem. I did notice they felt similar in materials. There has got to be something that is in these that causes this problem. My piece of advice is if you think something is wrong with the contact just ask to switch to a different brand. Don't wait. You know your eyes better than anyone else.

i have been wearing the oasis for about a year. i had to go on a 12 wear program, because if i fell asleep with them, i would look like i had pink eye for the next two days. if i wore them and took them off at night i would be ok. i did my research and ordered on line the Acuvue, originals, the plain acuvue that i wore without a problem. My problems have disappeared. i am now wearing my contacts, tonight would be 7 days. this is beautiful. i have diagnosed myself and found out that i am allergic to methyl cellulose, that is the only ingredient in Oasis that is not in the Acuvues before. This i am sure is pushed by doctors. This keeps them busy and you there to see them. I really believe its a scam, and playing with someones eyesight, should be a felony.

I'm so glad I came across this forum! I've been wearing contacts for almost 10 years and have never had problems. I am young and have always had very healthy eyes...that is, until I started wearing Acuvue Oasys a few months ago. I could never keep them in for long and they scratched and tore easily. But the tip of the iceberg was a few days ago when I lost vision in my right eye. My ophthalmologist said it cannot be fixed with a stronger prescription because the vision itself is blurry, and there might be damage to my optic nerve. I am now 100% on glasses. I have another appointment with my ophthalmologist today to discuss my next steps, which seem like they are going to be extensive (and expensive). I am likely going to have to meet with a neuro-ophthalmologist. I didn't think there was a connection between my eye problem and these contacts until I saw that many people have had similar problems. Let's hope these things are recalled soon!

The worst lenses I have ever used in my life, and I've been wearing contacts for 20 years. They seem to "wrinkle" within a day or two of wearing them, then they start to scratch my eyes (this happens in situations where I cannot remove my contacts, as my prescription is -10.5 and I am nearly legally blind without correction), and when I am finally in a position to take them out, they are almost impossible to remove. I am sitting here now in a pair of 10-year-old glasses with a scratched lens, terrible pain in my right eye, and no doctor's appointment available for another 12 days. If so many of us have had the same exact symptoms, including a need for medical care because of this product, count me in on the class action lawsuit.

Like many have reported, my initial experience with Oasys contacts was great. I stopped wearing contacts a few years ago because the made my eyes dry and uncomfortable, and these at first seemed fantastic. However being the suspicious type, I researched them and found this blog the first day I wore them.
Now 4 months later, I am back to report that I, too, have swollen red eyes. If I stop wearing the contacts, the symptoms go away. I stopped use of everything around my eye for a week (eye makeup, moisturizer, etc) and yesterday I tried them *one more time* -- yep, by 3pm my eyes were totally bloodshot and painful.
I am glad I found this blog and knew what to watch out for ahead of time so that I avoided causing permanent damage.

I was thinking class action myself! I want my money back! I've been wearing contacts for over ten years. These last about an hour in my eyes before I experience absolutely debilitating burning and itching. I had to pull over in my car and pull out my lenses. And I can't see well enough to drive without them! These are dangerous, and I'm worried that after just three weeks I might have permanent sensitivity or damage. What a joke.

WOW! I am so relieved to find this site. I have been a contact lens wearer for almost 20 years and didnt have a problem with my eyes until 2 years ago. I switched to the oasys and have experienced a lot of the symptoms that I have seen here (gooey eyes, contacts sticking to eyes, redness, pain). My doc kept telling me there were the best lenses for me but I wore plain 'ol Acuvue for years with no problems. I wish I thought to look online sooner, I gave up on my contacts and have been wearing glasses (which suck) for months now. If I put my contacts in I want to rip them out after a few hours and then they are stuck to my eye. Seriously, was the Oasys marketing people offering a free cruise or something to doctors who pushed these contacts?? I wish I had some warning about these lenses so at least I could have switched brands sooner when I was having problems. Im so angry.

I feel so lucky that I found this site before I did permanent damage to my eyes! I've worn gas perm lenses for 27 years and decided to switch to soft. My dr gave me Oasys last Thurs 4/16. I only wore them a few hours each day, but it kept getting worse. My eyes were burning and itching as soon as I put them in. It felt like they were glued to the bottom of my eyes. By Monday, I took them out as soon as I could. It almost felt like my eyes were paralyzed -- it was a weird feeling, kind of like when they're dilated. That took until the next day to get better. I also noticed that my eyesight was worse than it was last Thurs.
Since I'd never worn soft contacts before, I had nothing to compare to. It scares me how long I might have worn them thinking it was normal. I decided to look up "stinging, burning, contact lenses" and it brought me here and everyone was describing how my eyes were feeling.
Yesterday, I called and requested the Acuvue2 that so many here have talked about. The nurse couldn't understand why, since Oasys is the best! I've worn the Acuvue2 today and have absolutely no burning or stinging or glue-type feeling. Thank you so much for probably saving my eyes!!

I am shocked to read so many similar comments about these acuvue oasis lenses. My husband's optom. recommended them to him...he didn't ask for a new kind of lens and didn't have any major problems with his other lenses. So, then the saga begins. After a few months of red eyes, itchiness, sensitivity to light and general soreness his eyes flared up so bad he went to the hospital. After seeing 3 doctors (1 optometrist, 2 opthamologists) ALL three of them have told him different diagnosis. It has been over three weeks and his eyes ar still VERY bad! I thought I would just do a bit of research on the side effects of these acuvue lenses, but I can see he is not alone in having a problem. I am so angry to read all of these desperate comments. Why are these still on the market? WHERE is the WARNING?

These are the worst contacts I have ever worn. My Dr. said they were great and I needed to switch from acuvue advance to oasys. I have had so many eye infections, times when my eyes were bllod red, times when I could not get the contacts out of my eyes, blurred vision and a host of other issues. I kept blaming everything else and finally decided to google if anyone else had issues. So here I am and I just took out my contacts and put in some acuvue advance I had in the cabinet.I have been wearing these since September and hope I have not sustained permanent damage to my eyes. This is bullsh*t

Last Friday, I went to see my doctor to get a contact lens prescription (first time wearing contacts after 2 years of wearing glasses). He gave me a free trial of the Acuvue Oasys with Opti-Free multipurpose solution. I tried them on and felt fine for the first 3-4 hours. The next day, after wearing them for 5 hours, my eyes were totally bloodshot! I thought that my eyes were just not used to wearing contacts and would get better after regular/continuous wearing, but I am very glad to have found this site. I'm back to glasses for now until I find a more compatible contacts. :(

I have had all of the above problems with my eyes - dry eyes, corneal ulcers, corneal infiltrates and it all seems to have started when I got my Oasis lenses a few years ago. Yesterday my eye doctor told me that he is seeing more and more cases of this and believes that multi-purpose solution is the contributor to this problem. He recommends only using a disinfecting solution (Care One - the kind with the cylinder) and a straight saline solution instead of the multi-purpose solution. He says that works for a lot of his patients. I'm going to wear my glasses for a week, then hope this new solution works.

I have been dealing with the problem of dry eyes, damage to the surface of my eyes, reduced of visual acuity and possible long term affects from these Accuvue Oasis lenses. I am most frustrated that after 6 weeks of visiting my eye doctor for weekly follow ups his final diagnosis was , well I guess you can't wear lenses anymore... and stating he simply was not sure what the problem was except he thought it was the herbs I take for my allergies. NOT! Why didn't my eye doctor have any clue I might be having an allergic reaction to these lenses? And now that my eyes have some damage does he have an accountability for his lack of information about this product. I am feeling very concerned about this and have contacted an attorney to inquire about a class action law suit. This is dismaying to me. I am grateful to not have had the extent of problems some others have reported. Scary stuff.

Finally googled a bit and came across others with similar and serious eye problems.

Hi, my doctor recommended me this contacts, he even gave me a free sample. I started usind them on friday, they were perfect. On Saturday they were fogged, I had to clease them at least three times ... yesterday (sunday) the same thing, and when I took them off at night, i noticed that one of them had one side teared off (a very very small part). I have been wearing contact lenses for at least 18 years, never have I broken or tear off one!!!!!!
I was amazed, I put them on today because I had to, again they vere foggy (I took my contact lens solution to the office) and I am buying new lenses, NOT OASYS, asap.
They felt so great for one day! what a shame ...

The worst part is that I am legally blind in my other eye so I hope when I get back into the regular acuvues this all clears up. I will be at the eye Dr. when they open in the a.m.. THIS IS UNREAL how many people on here are describing the same problems i have had too! I wore contacts without a single problem for 8 years, and my eye doctor said to try oasys and all of a sudden i contracted giant papillary conjunctivitis GCP... my eyes were pussy and messed up all the time- it was embarrassing... I ended up talking to my best friend, and he said he had the SAME problem- then i dated a girl and she explained the SAME problem; and another friend of mine told me the same deal.
To this day i have problems with contacts now and my eyes are always dry. Eye doctors have used me as a corporate Guinea pig- and ive spent all my money on expensive steroids and god knows. You know after reading all these posts- i think there should be some corporate responsibility and ITS TIME TO SEND IN THE LAWYERS.

I am not alone. Thank goodness.
In Response to Julie (04/25/09 10:12am) - I too had problems with a brand new pair that I ordered in early April '09. I have been in contacts for 15 years, and I have been wearing Oasys since October '08.
I always noticed that my eyes hurt after taking out my contacts, but i thought it was because i wore them for 14+ hours a day at a computer screen.
In April '09 I ran out of contacts and ordered more. My eye doctor shipped the new Oasys to my house. Within several days I had very irritated, red eyes (in a red ring around my iris). I went to the doctor a week later, and i had a corneal ulcer. I got treated with vigamox. after that was cleared up, i got the OK to wear the contacts again. I put a fresh pair of Oasys in. Immediate redness. So i went back to the doctor, and he just said that "sometimes these things happen" and I didn't have an ulcer anymore, but i might have a viral infection. he told me to continue with the vigamox just in case. After a few more days (and time and $$ spent on Dr Visits) I got the OK for contacts again.
2 weeks went by, but I was wearing my contacts less, and it seemed my tolerance was lower.
Then i got an acute eye pain that i believe was actually UV damage from the dentist's office (like welder's arc) but my new opthamologist wasn't 100% certain that it could have been the UV damage. I had an abrasion on my cornea (precursor to an ulcer) and with my recent ulcer history, he was concerned my contacts were rubbing me the wrong way. So, once I was healed, he had me try the Oasys again - but in a different size.
Within 3 days i have redness and pain. Not much discharge. Took the contacts out Monday night and my eyes were sore and burning all day Tuesday and now it is Wednesday. Redness has gone away but pain remains.
I am going to the Opthamologist tomorrow and demanding another brand.
I really think there was something different in my last batch of Oasys contacts! Has anyone besides me and Julie had this?

I've been using a trial pair of the Acuvue Oasys contact lenses for the last 3 days, and have found the lenses to be just awful. After making an online search for Oasys contact lenses and blurry vision, I found this site. I experienced the strange 'sliding in your eye' feeling, that so many of you have already described, and the blurred, unclear vision altogether. I've been a contact lens wearer for about 15 years, and have never experienced these issues with other contact lenses. Thank goodness I didn't go ahead and just buy them without using the trial pair, because now I know I will definitely not be buying Acuvue Oasys contact lenses. Ever.

I have had the same problems with Oasys contacts. A couple of years ago, my eye doctor switched me to these "new great contacts" that were supposed to be so much better for me. I was fine for a few months, but then I developed "viral pinkeye". Again, and again. I have been through it all-- vigamox, steroids, preservative-free eye drops-- I've had "infiltrates" in my eyes for over a year now. They won't go away. It took a full year for them to go away the first time, and then the eye doctor put me in Oasys, and they returned. It's been over a year since then and they are still not gone. Two different eye doctors say that I will never be able to wear contacts again-- but they do not explain how this is possible after 11 years of wearing contacts with no problems.
Reading these comments, I still have hope that if my infiltrates clear up, maybe I can be switched back to an older brand and wear contacts again. Has anyone had success with going back to contacts after over a year of dealing with this?

Oasys lenses were OK for me at first but when allergy season started I had problems. My lenses always felt intolerably dry, dirty, scratchy & foggy even just a couple days after starting a new pair. I had to stop wearing them. My eye doctor said the increased eye secretions from seasonsal allergies tend to stick to the material Oasys are made of, which then collects microscopic bits of dust & dirt, irritating your eyes even more. So definitely do not use Oasys if you have seasonal allergies.

I have had a terrible time with the Acuvue Oasys Lenses. I have worn contacts off and on since I was about 16. I am 43. I thought it just because I have worn them for a while and needed get used to them. So I gave it a try. I wake up during the night with eyes that feel like they are sealed shut and extremely bloodshot. I have tried changing disinfection systems, allergy eyedrops and lenses refresher drops. I don't sleep in my lenses. Never have. My vision is not very sharp and I noticed that light affects my vision also. I have trouble driving at night. I went back to the dr. and he said to keep trying them and then order my regular lenses. Well on Monday I am going to call and say that I want to try something else. I have worn glasses before and I can wear them again! But I would really like to wear contacts again.

After using Oasys for a year I have endured nothing but complications with my eyes. I have since been to 3 different optometrists and have been diagnosed with corneal edema and have chronic dry eyes. My most recent optometrist informed me that I have permanent eyesight damage from the contacts. I have sensitivity to flourescent lights, foggy and blurry vision, dry eyes, and constant bloodshot, red/irritated eyes.
DO NOT wear these contacts! I am pursuing a class action lawsuit.

If you're serious about the class action lawsuit, please let me or anyone else know about this. I was recently diagnosed with a Corneal Ulcer. But for the last few years (after switching to Acuvue Oasys) started having eye problems. Swelling of the eyes, redness, itching, burning and everytime I went to the doctor was told I was allergic to my eye makeup or its just allergies. I don't have allergies. And I've been wearing Hypoallergenic makeup since I was 16! I'm afarid I may end up with permanent damage as well and will be seeking a 2nd opinion this week on the corneal ulcer.

Manufactured in Ireland vs. USA
I've used the Oasys for years, and have not had a problem until recently when I tried a box manufactured in the USA. My old Oasys lenses were made in Ireland, and they work fine, but the ones made in the USA become blurry after a few hours of use, as if they are drying out differently than the others. I've gone through 3 boxes of the USA lenses, and none of them work. Anyone else have similar issues?

And i always clean the lenses and never sleep oevernight in them..my optometrist says its due to my dry eye (which i didnt have when i was wearing my previous brand of contacts)...I will never wear these lenses again!

I went to my eye doctor last week to get my yearly prescription, and within an hour the new ones became very blurry and I was seeing halos. I toughed it out for about three days but couldn't take it anymore. Luckily I still had my old ones, put them in and no problem, crystal clear! My doctor ordered in a new batch for me to try, but I'm really leary to even use them now. I tried Acuvue Oasys for astigmatism for less than a week, and they burned, itched, and made my eyes bloodshot, so I went back to the contacts I wore prior. About a month later I got an infected ulcerated cornea. After a few trips to the eye Dr., and an expensive prescription it is a lot better, but I now have a scar on my cornea. The only other 2 people I personally know that have tried Acuvue Oasys contacts also had similar reactions, along with the extra expense. I think it's more than a coincidence.

I received a free trial pair of Acuvue Oasys on Monday. Wore them again on Tuesday. I woke up today with eyes more bloodshot than I've ever seen. On a whim, I did a google search to find this site. I have never trusted optometrists and I think now I never will. He recommended the Oasys saying they were better for my eyes; letting in more oxygen. So, I gave it a try even though I have worn ProClear Compatibles for years without problems. BIG mistake. For the first time, I am ready to consider Lasik. The fear of it has melted away after this experience.

I've been a contact lens user since the age of 18. I'm 49 now. Over the last 5 years I developed acute eye dryness. I managed okay with Surevue disposables but unfortunately they were taken off the market. The replacement Acuavues never suited me. I tried Acuvue Advanced for Astigmatism without success. Finally, I went to a new opthamologist in New York city in June. She said she had just the thing for my dry eyes and astigmatism and fitted me with Acuvue Oasys for the princely sum of $300. Well, I was willing to pay what it took to fix my contact lens problems forever. The new contact lens seemed fine that first week, and I, wanting to save money, went and ordered an entire year's supply online. Darned stupid thing to do, in retrospect. July was just fine. In August I developed red eyes, followed by acute conjunctivitis. I couldn't keep my eyes open, I was in horrible pain and felt someone was running a knife through my cornea. I was treated for conjunctivitis and recovered after two weeks of taking time off and basically lying low in a darkened room. As soon as the infection subsided, I went back and wore AcueVue Oasys for another week. (A doubly darned stupid thing to do but I'd no way of knowing that the contact lens was responsible for the infection.) The same condition set in, this time so acutely that I was rushed to emergency and diagnosed with the beginnings of an ulcerated cornea. My vision had decreased by an entire degree in one eye, a degree and a quarter in the other. I was categorically forbidden from wearing contacts ever again, any contact lens, period. I took the opinion of two opthamologists who both confirmed that the silicone in Acuvue Oasys was responsible for my condition. Finally after a very troubled and difficult two and a half months of treatment and a slow recovery (I was off work for an entire month) I've had monovision lasik eye surgery done. My contact lens problems are indeed over forever. I've fixed my myopia, astigmatism and presbyopia in one stroke. I feel absolutely terrific. It's indeed ironical, but since I had the lasik surgery done in New Delhi, it's cost me less than what I spent on a year's supply of Oasys and the cost of fitting them in NYC! And I've had absolutely terrific, first rate care in India. I can't believe how close I came to destroying my vision forever. Please be very careful with Acuvue Oasys. I think it's criminal that opthamologists in the United States don't warn their patients of possible side-effects. Not only are they not for everyone, they are disarmingly easy to use at first. It's only after a few weeks of use that you realize the toll it's taking on your eyes, and by then it can be too late. For the sake of safety, these contact lenses should be recalled asap.

For all of you who feel this discussion is crap, I suggest you think about the logical side of the situation. Why would this many people make up something about their discomfort with this product? Who decides that they want to have itcy, buring, red eyes due to a contact lense that is supposed to make life more convenient?
I too have been a victim of the allergy to these contacts and my eyes have not been the same. I was switched to proclear after the diagnosis, but after a year my eyes are still itcy and occassionally turn red. I dont think the steroid drops worked and the irritation I feel from this experience has caused me to seriously consider taking action. I dont have insurance anymore and have not been able to get back to seeing someone about my condition, but even without contacts I want to rip my eyes out! Whether you think you are invincible or the exception to the rule. I would NEVER EVER recommend these contacts to anyone. I wouldnt suggest takin the risk of being one of us.

For 20 years I had no problems with my eyes and then the Dr told me about lenses for astigmatism and was switched to Accuvue oasys. I never linked, the dry red bloodshot eyes, the itching to the change in lenses until I saw this site. I have all the symptoms each of you is mentioning and now know what damage I have done to my eyes because of these lenses.

Contact lens wearer for 15 plus years - started with Acuvue Advanced, switched to Acuvue Oasys about 5-6 years. Always used Opti-free products - no problems. Been having headaches, blurry light glow for almost three years but physician but it down to hormonal changes and family history of migraine headahces.
June 2009, decided to try B&L Multi Focus lens. New optometrist changed prescription strength on one eye - headaches calmed down but I decided I did not like the side effect of Multi Focus - harder to drive at night with those than Acuvue.
Went back to optometrist a week ago Friday 1/22. Got trial pair of Acuvue Oasys because of the change in prescription - Saturday lens were fine, Sunday right lens became foggy within an hour, left eye 30 minutes later...couldn't make it back to the doctor's office until Tuesday - between that day and this past Monday 3/1 have had to change out one lens or the other - replacement lens would be good for a day, then be foggy the next - so foggy could not see to drive or work.
The nurse in the doctor's office even changed the solution when I went in Tuesday 1/26 to Clear Care - it made no difference. I see the optometrist tomorrow and will tell him, no way will I put an Acuvue Oasys lens on my eye ever again. I will go back to Acuvue Advance or another brand - a friend recommened the B & L Day and Night.
I am so glad I decided to google this subject tonight. Thank you for posting and I hope my post helps someone else.

I am so glad I found this site. I thought it was just me. I had a trial pair of these and thought they were great, I couldn't feel them at all at first. Stupidly I ordered a year's worth. Just got them in and I have had bloodshot eyes ever since. I was wondering why my eyes were goopy in the morning, and that my vision seemed EXTRA blurry when I did not have contacts in. I can not believe this product is still on the market. I am going to try to get my money back because I DO NOT want permanent damage. Although I probably already do. Wonderful, thank you Acuvue :-)

I, like the many others on this site, developed an ulcer on my eye after being switched from Acuvue 2 to the Oasys. I have worn contact lenses for 30 years & have never had such problems. Now 4 or 5 visits later to my eye dr & prescriptions & time off from work, I wonder what can be done. I am so glad to see the common connection to my eye problems.

I went to a new eye doctor a week ago and got a trial pair of Acuvue Oasys. They make my eyes burn and feel dry. Also, I don't know if I got the wrong prescription or if it's these lenses, but I see worse in these lenses than in my old ones. I'm going back tomorrow for a recheck and will be asking for an RX to my regular brand, Acuvue Advanced for Astigmatism. They have never gave me any problems at all.

I got a severe eye inflammation for MONTHS. My eyes, especially the left one, were swollen and blood shot. I also developed little red bumps. My left eyelid became swollen and more closed than my other eye. It took 6 months for the swelling to go away and it's been 2 1/2 years and my left eyelid is still swollen. It all started when I changed to Acuvue Oasys lenses.

I recently switched to Acuvue Oasys Hydraclear 2 contacts and find that after wearing them daily for about a couple weeks or more, something in the lenses change and really begins to burn my eyes. It's as if there is some coating on the lenses that wears off and when that happens I have to immediately remove them and change lenses to a new pair. I'm wondering if they did this on purpose to keep selling more lenses more rapidly. No visible change can be seen and yet when I re-insert them it clearly burns like soap or worse in your eyes.

It is such a relief to find all these comments. I've worn Acuvue Oasys for a few months now and in the past weeks have dealt with a whole host of unpleasant problems. I am incredibly careful with my contacts, but they've been nothing but trouble. I've experienced itching, burning, irritation. I put them in this morning and for the last few hours, vision in my right eye has been very blurry and it's felt like the contact has been painfully scratching my eye. Thank god I found a bottle of solution in my desk drawer to try and rinse it with. I shouldn't have to put up with any of this! Going to ask my optometrist to switch me back to Acuvue 2 ASAP.

Frustrated! I'm a new contact lens wearer. Dr. gave me a trial pair of Oasys. Worked great! Ordered the year's supply. Opened first 2 boxes (right and left) - unbearable! blurry vision. Opened a different box - same thing. Brought them back - Dr. thought maybe it was something about the way they were stored. GAve me another trial pair to tie me over and Ordered an entirely new "year's supply" - different lot numbers.
Tried the new ones yesterday. Same thing! Any thoughts?? These were ordered from Costco.

I took out a BRAND new one yesterday and found it was already ripped!! These contacts rip VERY easyly and are extremly uncomfortable.. They dry up very quickly and I have to blink every couple seconds. Also I have found my eyes get very blurry after I wear them. I do not recomend these!!!!

I had to go to my non-regular eye doctor for an exam and he made me try Acuvue Oasys (not samples, I had to buy them) after I've been effectively using Biomedics 55 for 8 years.
The result was horrible, the Oasys kept moving around in my eyes and I can absolutely feel its edges scraping against my eyeballs! My eyes were red, itchy, burning, and irritated in a matter of hours. I threw them out and wasted my hard earned money - thanks doc. It took days for my eyes to recover and had to wear my eye glasses for a while.
I went back to my regular contact lenses, Biomedics 55 and no problems after that.

I'm one of the multitudes of people having trouble with Oasys lenses. Dry, itchy, blurry, even blame them for making my nose run while at the office since that doesn't happen while I'm in glasses.
But the real thing we should be talking about are WAYS TO FIX THE PROBLEM. So few people are naming which contacts they use now that they love.
Should I switch to Acuvue 2 first? Which contacts have you fallen in love with after the disaster of Oasys?
Thanks.

I have been wearing acuvue oasys for 3 years. last november when I got my one year supply, my eyes got foggy and headaches started from the first minute of wearing them. I tried the trial pair from my doctor they were fine and I found out the only difference between them are that they are now manufactured in ireland. If you compare the ones from ireland and the other ones from US they have difeerent shape even though they are supposedly same BV=8.4

I was using Accuvue2 and was told by the optometrist that Oasys would give me clearer vision and allow more oxygen. He said my eye was developing some kind of blood vessel from lack of oxygen. Naturally, I switched but thought my vision suffered. I blamed other things like some medication I was taking for bursitis. I also blamed my sticky eyes on other things.
I have never worn them overnight and still experience the symptons others have. Thank you to everyone for sharing. I realize I was not imagining the deterioration of my vision. The contact lens company
should recall the lenses. I am going to try to return my unused boxes.

I have the same issue. One year ago, I was switched from Acuvue 2 to Oasys. In a period of only one year, I developed two small corneal ulcers -- one on each eye, unrelated -- roughly six months apart from one another. I experienced very little pain or unnatural dryness with the lens, but having previously worn Acuvue 2 with no issues for close to a decade, I am fairly convinced Oasys is to blame.
AVOID these contacts, even if you are -- like me -- a heavy computer user. Eye strain is a much smaller problem than infected ulcers popping up even from the tiniest, most insignificant scratch.

I, like Jonathan from a previous post (11/03/09), have worn Acuvue Oasys for years without any problems. Last week I received my new lenses and was dismayed to discover that my vision was now cloudy. I put the old Acuvue Oasys lenses back in and had no problems. Something has changed between the beginning of 2009 (when I ordered my last batch of lenses) and today.
Has any found a solution or a good alternative lens?

I have been a contact lens wearer for 35 years. Last week my eye doc switched me from CooperVision EP to Acuvue Oasys as there was a desire to put me in a lens that might offer better Presbyopia (age related loss of near vision (reading)). The experience has been horrible. Pain, blurred vision, and now an infection. I am convinced that the Acuvue company has some sort of incentive that is motivating all of the "easter egging" and chasing of the latest thing in contacts. Never again. If it works, stay with it. If you are fed the line "more Oxygen" get a second opinion - nearly all soft lenses since 2003 have close to the same permiablilty.

I've worn contacts for 57 years and soft lenses for a long time. I wore the Acuvue Toric lenses which are for astigmatism with wonderful comfort and then had to be switched over to Acuvue Advance when the Toric were discontinued! I had terrible itching, cloudiness, redness. So, the eye doctor tried me on Oasys for astigmatism. I have continual blurriness, have lost my long distance driving sight, have to stop several times when driving any distance to rewet my eyes with saline. What have they done to these lenses! And why did they discontinue those Toric that caused no problems and always gave me clear vision. Please tell me another brand to try or I will have to go back to glasses for driving after years of happy contact lense wearing.

I'm so glad I found this comment board because I've been on Oasys lenses for three years and I thought I was going blind. Since wearing them, my far distance was terrible, so bad that i had to ask people with me in the car when my exit would come up foggy and I could barely read a book because the edges of letters were superimposed on each other. Finally, I went back to my optometrist who had prescribed the same Oasys lenses after my last exam and asked to try different brands. Proclears were bad also. They say it might be the silicone in them. I tried a pair of Acuvue2 and the difference is like night and day! I haven't seen this well in three years. Thank you for this comment board!

I have worn contacts since the age of 17 (I am now 29) with no problems until recently. In Nov. 2009, my doctor suggested that Oasys lens would be better for my eye than the Acuvue 2's so I switched. They never felt quite right, but I forced myself because I thought they were "better for my eyes." It's been almost a year now and I have recently had two eye infections and diagnosed with GPC. I have been in glasses for almost a month and am losing patience. I think I will demand to go back to Acuvue 2's. They were the best and the cheapest too!

I've worn my Bausch and Lomb SofLens Toric 66 for a really long time pretty comfortably. I tried switching over to Acuvue Oasys after my ophalmologist suggested it. They do stick well to your eyes, but almost too well. They were danm near impossible to take off the first time and I still feel like I have to claw at my eyeballs sometimes to get them off. I ALWAYS get bloodshot eyes no matter how well I clean them off or even if they're brand new from the seal. I do like the fact that they are supposed to be UV blocking (my -10 eyes don't need any more damage lol), but the cons are totally not worth it. I'm switching back. I did give these lenses a fair shake (6 months), but enough is enough.

I have worn Acuvue 2 for 9+ years for 12 - 15 hrs/day, 7 days/week without any problems. Switched to Acuvue Oasys and then it was all downhill. Same problems that were noted above - itchy, watery eyes, blurry visionas if the lens did not want to seat well on my eye, the lens would "skate" when I blinked, often getting trapped under my eyelid. Yes that is painful. Got misdiagnosed 3 times by 3 doctors. One said that I am getting old (aren't we all??). The next said that I had blepharitis. The third thought that I needed a new presciption. Ultimately, I switched to Aquacomfort Plus Dailies. I like them so far. No itch, and I have excellent vision. Wow, what an experience. I vote 1/10 for Acuvue Oasys.

My story is the same as a lot of these. I wore Acuvue 2 lenses for years with no problems, and after one year of Acuvue Oasys lenses I have "cellular changes to my cornea" (whatever that means... the doctor didn't elaborate too well) in my right eye that are causing halos, light sensitivity, blurred vision, and poor night vision. My doctor said to take my contacts out and come back in a week, at which point she'll see if there are any signs of healing at all. I'm hoping this isn't permanent so I can go back to Acuvue 2 lenses, which were always great.
