One kind of statin - simvastatin - has been found to reduce the incidence of Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease.
The first study to suggest that statins might reduce the incidence of Parkinson's disease - conducted by researchers from Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM) - simvastatin reduced the incidence of Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease by almost 50 percent.
This benefit from simvastatin (popularly sold in the market as Zocor®) might be due to the combination of high potency and the ability to enter the brain.
The striking findings have been published in the July online open access journal BioMed Central (BMC) Medicine.
