Silicone Hydrogel Contact Lenses (senofilcon-A): ACUVUE OASYS® Brand Contact Lenses with HYDRACLEAR™ Plus, Alleviate Computer Vision Syndrome
Filed in archive Diagnostics , Studies , Treatment on November 20, 2006
According to the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health, nearly 88% of all computer users will develop Computer Vision Syndrome at some time in their lives.
What is Computer Vision Syndrome? ( I also would like to know as am spending more of my waking hours in front of the computer.)
Generally, it is eye-related problems and the other symptoms caused by prolonged computer use, often dry or tired eyes after computer use.
However, wearers of contact lenses are more likely than non-wearers to experience at least one of the symptoms often associated with the disorder.
Thanks goodness I am still wearing glasses.
But there is good news for contact lenses wearers, a new research demonstrates that the use of new-generation silicone- hydrogel lenses (senofilcon-A) can alleviate some of these problems.
According to Dr. Jeffrey Anshel, a practicing optometrist and author of Visual Ergonomics in the Workplace:
"The unique characteristics and high visual demands of computer work make many individuals, particularly contact lens wearers, susceptible to the development of eye and vision-related problems.
Research shows that while using a computer, we blink about three times less than normally. These long non-blinking phases can cause the surface of most contact lenses to dry out, which can lead to extreme discomfort and a loss of visual clarity."
Senofilcon A is a new-generation silicone hydrogel material in ACUVUE OASYS® Brand Contact Lenses with HYDRACLEAR™ Plus (trademarks of Johnson Vision Care, Inc.)
The said study which reported that contact lenses made with senofilcon A can alleviate some of the common problems of soft contact lens wear is published in the current issue of Eye & Contact Lens, the peer reviewed journal of the Contact Lens Association of Ophthalmologists.
Any idea how much this product is? I am getting interested.

Is anyone having any problems with the Acuvue Oasys lenses? I loved them, but by the third day, my eyes are itching and when I awake they are closed shut. Any comments welcome. Thanks

I assume your Acuvue Oasys are extended wear contacts. Have you checked the contact lens solution? Otherwise head on back to your eye doctor and see what they have to say.

I had a similar problem, acuvue oasys was making my eyes itchy when I switched to them from acuvue advanced. by the 3rd day my eyes were stinging painfully and I had to take them out. I think it was an allergic reaction

I have been wearing contact lenses since I was 7 or 8 years old, and I'm 19 now. I was wearing Acuvue 2 lenses for years, and when I changed doctors, she put me on the Oasys. Well, a few month later, my eyes hurt. She prescribed "Vigamox" and told me I had an eye allegy...yet Vigamox is for eye infections. Well, a few week later, I go to another doctor, tells me I have yet another infection. Back to the prescription, no contacts for a few weeks, and then bam...another infection. Back to the doctor, back on the prescription eyedrops. A few weeks later, all is calm, then ANOTHER eye infection. I go to the Doctor and he said that I was sensitive to the increased silicone content, which was causing all these problems. Basically, he said that if you had success wearing Acuvue 2's, you're going to keep wearing Acuvue 2.

I started wearing Oasys last year. After wearing them for a number of months I started having problems with my eyes, itching and very painful with light sensitivity. My doctor said I may be allergic to the solution so I changed to a different solution. Things got better but I was still having problems when I would wear the contacts. I switched back to my old lense brand and the itching/pain is gone but I have lost a significant amount of vision in one eye. Has anyone else experienced vision loss with Oasys?

I have worn contacts off and on for several years. During the past year I have worn Acuvue Advance lenses, but have experienced problems in my right eye several times. Symptoms include stinging and pain (as if something is in the eye). After removing the lens the eye will tear constantly and the next day I awaken to swelling and well, mucous in the eye. I have read the comments pertaining to Oasis, but has anyone else experienced problems with Acuvue Advance for Astigmatisms?

I started wearing Oasys last spring. My eyes bothered me quite a bit initially, but I didn't think much of it, as I worked at a computer and had just switched lenses. I noticed a few months ago that my vision was markedly deteriorated and called my optometrist. He was baffled and sent me to an opthamologist the next day. He told me I had optic neuritis and told me to check back in a couple of months...Then referred to a neuro-opthamologist who told me I had subepithelial infiltrates from the Oasys. My local doctors are skeptical. My optometrist wouldn't change me off of the Oasys, though he changed me from a -6.0 to a -7.0 correction. He also changed my solution. These things hurt.
My symptoms included light sensitivity, red eyes, vision loss. I am furious about the number of doctors, amount of travelling, and permanent loss of vision.

Do you think that patients with lower Schirmer's scores benefit more than someone who has moderate dry eye? I tried wearing Oasys, Acuvue Advance, and Proclear earlier this summer. All three brands felt comfortable the first day (with rewetting drops), then the days after that first day were horrible. I'm also not as dry as your most dry patients that have been able to successfully wear the contact lenses. My Schirmer's is a 5 in my right eye and a 7 in my left. My TBUT is a 3 and 9, respectively.

I am using the same solution as always--a store brand. After reading these posts, I am think it is better to change. Thanks for sharing the info.

I ran out of my Acuvue 2 a while back and when i went to the eye doctor to get my semiannual check up he told me i should check out Oasys because they allow the eyes to breathe better. These contacts make my eyes extremely tired and irritable and i almost always end up putting my glasses back on within a few hours of having them in. They make me want to close my eyes.

Three weeks ago I was switched to Oasys brand contacts. The first couple of days were fine, then I began noticing a blurriness for which I would have to blink repeatedly to clear - both eyes, or either/or. Then it became very significant with activities such as working out, running, working in the yard, ie, getting sweaty, etc. Has anyone had a similar experience?

Yes I had, but do you know what helped me? Yoga! There’s this exercise I do every day: you move your eyes as best as you can on the right, then on the left and then rotate them ten times on the right and them on the left. After a while you will feel improvement.

I am glad to know that I am not crazy. Reading these resposes from people whom have tried the oasys contacts. I had corneal ulcers and hemmorhages. Now Thygeson's keratitis. all started from trying the new and improved contacts. The opthamologists dont really acknowledge YET, that maybe these contacts (silicone?) ingerdients may actually be the cause of some newly developing eye problems in patients. The response that mentioned "tight feeling" really hit home with me. I understand that description. How about "suctioning the inside of your eyeball out"

I have been wearing contact lenses since I was 16 years old, and I'm 50 now. I was wearing Acuvue 2 lenses for years, and when I changed doctors, she put me on the Oasys. Well, a month later, my eyes hurt. She prescribed "Vigamox" and told me I had an eye allegy...yet Vigamox is for eye infections. The drainage cleared up and then I put a new pair of Oasys in and after three days, my eyes were matted shut again. Then I was perscribed Alrex and no contacts for a few weeks. She feels I am sensitive to the increased silicone content, which was causing all these problems. Basically, she said that if you had success wearing Acuvue 2's, we would go back to them. This is a shame because the Oasys did feel more comfprtable at first. This was also very costly. Is is possible the contacts are contaminated, if so many people are having problems with them?

After 6 months of wearing Oasys, I diagnosed myself last night and I believe I was right after reading everyone's complaints. My Acuvue 2's were great for years upon years. I heard they weren't as good for your eyes as the silicone based Oasys, so I switched over. My eye lids and the corners of my eyes itch like crazy, my eyes get blurred until I blink it out, my eyes feel heavy, tired and sting, especially the night I take them out. It feels like there is goopy stuff in my eyes. I think I'm allergic to them. I'm switching back to Acuvue 2's tomorrow. What is up with Oasys and why aren't they warning people about the product?

05/26/07, I am so glad that I have found this posting. I was diagnosed last Wed with an ulcer on my cornea. It is very painful, I have worn contacts for 24 years and I have never had a problem until now. I was changed to the Oasys contacts and now have an ulcer. I do not wear them to bed, I change my solution and discard them when needed. I think there is a real problem with these lens and something needs to be done!!!

I have been wearing the OASYS since January 2006. Last year around this time I had some discomfort in my one eye to a point where my whole eye turned red. My eye was sensitive to light and it felt as if someone was poking my eye with a needle. When I went to the doctors they told me I had an ulser due to something getting betwen my eye and contact lense and scratched my cornia, which cuased the infection. I was subsrcibed VIGAMOX and I was told to take the medication for 2 weeks. After two weeks I was able to wear my contacts. Throughout the year I experienced discomfort. It was a discomfort that I never had before with other different brands of contacts. This past month my eye got infected again. I saw the same white dots as before and, which were the ulcers, and I started the VIGAMOX treatment. When I saw that the dots went away I put a new pair of contacts and my eye started to bother me again after 3-4 dyas. I finally went to see the doctor and they said that I had the ulcer again. I had expained to them that I had spoken to some family members and they had the same problem with the OASYS when they first tried them and that they had to switch back to thier previous brand. So now, once my eye clears up, I am going in for another exam and try a different brand of contacts. I cant be waisting my time doing all of these treatments every so often. After reading all of the posts I really think its the contact lenses.

Okay, add me to the list of dissatisfied patients using AcuVue Oasys contacts. I thought it was just me. Mine feel great for the first 3-4 days, then begin to itch with significant discharge and matting with subsequent use. My doctor says that he thinks it's just seasonal irritation and allergies, although I've never had these symptoms before with the Acuvue 2 lenses. My 22 yr old daughter has exactly the same problems with Oasys, too. We've both been trying to stay with the lenses for a year now, but after our eye problems and then reading of user complaints, we'll be returning to the Acuvue 2's.
This product should be recalled. Like other lens users, we have taken lots of antibiotics and made many visits to the opthomologist. I predict a class action lawsuit featuring Oasys lenses in the future.

Wow, I can not even begin to explain how much better I feel after reading all of these posts about how terrible the Oasys contacts are. Though, my situation is a little different. I have been wearing the Oasys contacts since December 2006, and every so often I had problems with my eyes being irritated but nothing too drastic. This all came crashing down when I refilled my order last week. Immediately I woke up each morning with my eyes being puffy, very red, and had a discharge around my eyes. After putting them back in I began having headaches, and took them out which ended them. I have been wearing my glasses for a couple of days now, and finally today I went back to the place I purchased them and it seems that they have no idea what I am talking about! All I know is I better get all my money back and new contacts other than this crap!!

Can anyone tell me if they know if a class action lawsuit is in the works for Acuvue Oasys? Like most of you, I had worn Acuvue 1 for many years and switched to Acuvue Oasys in January 2007. By March 2007 I had developed an ulcer on my cornea and just went thru a Cornea transplant last week. I know this has to be a result of the Oasys brand. Does anyone know how to find out if a lawsuit is pending?

I didn't see many complaints then, and thought that I was unusual. It's disturbing that doctors aren't more aware of the problems.

I've been wearing contacts for eight years and never had a problem, the oasys contacts develop tiny rips on the edges and I feel like I have something in my eye. Maybe this is what some other peoples contacts are doing when experiencing the itching? I am going on the acuvue web site to complain now- the worst part of it was the cost being twice what the acuvue 2 lenses were and only having the contacts last one day to two weeks!

I hate these things...J & J Acuvue Oasys. I have been wearing J&J Acuvue 1 & 2 since 1992 and have never had a problem. They (the new ones) were okay for a couple of days and then bam...infections! Nothing but problems...infections, infections, infections....some mornings, I wake up and can't even open my eyes due to the green crusty yuck stuck to my eye lashes! They are thick and heavy (the contacts) compared to the old version!...I'm really disappointed with this product. I have 6 more boxes (of six) to go through...so so disapointed....

Yow!! Good to see it's not just me.
Started wearing contacts before soft lenses, so I'm familiar with irritation.
When soft lenses came out I was there, among the first. Wore Acuvue, Acuvue 2, then Acuvue Advance, which bothered me a bit after a week plus of wear and slowly wore them less and less often believing my eyes were just too sensitive.
When Oasys came out I thought this had to be the answer and got them. Loved them for a couple days. After three or four days I got the eye glop. A week and my right eye turned red. I had some antibiotic from an old eye infection (maybe?) from wearing the Advance and after a week of drops and non-wear I was OK. Put in a new pair of Oasys and six days later there I was again. Called the doc, he wears them and said everyone loves them. Change solution and three days later the itch and glop.
I went back to Acuvue 2 and all is well. The Advance and Oasys are BOTH silcon.
Something is going on here and I'm glad I came to this site because, silly me, I was about to give the Oasys a try again as I have several unused pair.
I never sleep in my lenses and have never had a pair of Oasys last a week without redeye so it has nothing to do with improper wear. Beware!!!

Wow...so I'm not crazy. For years I've worn B & L Soft Lens 38. No problems, love them. Went to eye dr. and he detected neo vasculization due to lack of oxygen to the cornea and suggested that I try the new silicon lenses. I have tried 4 different brands of these lenses with the same irritated, blurry result. When I go back to my old Soft Lens 38, I'm fine. My eye dr. has not had this problem with any of his patients with the new lenses. I have never slept with the lenses in overnight. When I wake up in the morning though my eyes are red and crusty. For anyone wearing Oasys and having problems, please beware! I wrote earlier and hoped to avoid pain for others. I have been out of work since March of this year because of these lenses. I finally had to have a corneal transplant in June, and Dr says it can actually take up to 1 year for the new cornea to take. Like many of you, I wore Acuvue 1 for many years without problems. I switched to Oasys in January of this year, and my problems started in March. I hope if anyone hears of a class action suit, they will pass it along!

I just came from the eye doctor yesterday with similar problems. My eye was actually bleeding and irritated. The doctor told me that these Oasys lenses deposit a gooky substance on your eye if you wear them past their two week life span and she made me feel guilty for misusing them but until I read some of these other comments ,I just remembered I had a similar problem with going to sleep at night after taking the contacts out for the day because they were so uncomfortable and irritating and waking up in the morning with red eyes and eyes crusted shut. I thought I had an infection so I threw that pair of contacts away and about a week later I put new ones in and in a few days the same thing! and that was w/3 day old contacts. I am really angry about this because when I went to the first eye doctor about eye irritation and bleeding she said my eye was fine and she said she had never heard about anything like this happening before. She was the one who changed me from acuvue 2 to oasyis. I had to go to a 2nd eye doctor to be treated for my eye ulcer.

The first few months were fine but then my eyes started feeling very dry, heavy and tired every night. i would even wake up every morning with crusted shut red eyes. sometimes i wouldnt even be able to walk outside due to how sensitive my eyes were to light. I was constantly suing drops at this point to help eliminate the dryness, but it did not help. 3 days ago i found a red ring around my iris and i can aleardy tell i have lost a lot of my vision so now i have a appoint with the eye doc tom. im thinking i may be with you all and have a corneal ulcer. but i know its the conacts!! never use them please!

These contacts are horrible. I have been wearing contacts for 25 yrs w/ no problems. My Dr. put me in Acuvue Oasys lenses, I wore them for about 3 wks then started to have problems. My eyes were red, sore and I had discharge from both. I went to the Dr. and was told I had 2 eye infections and was put on drops. My left eye did not get any better. It hurt so bad and was hard to keep open. I was just told that I have a staff infection and given new medication and was told I would need to take steroids after I finish the new drops. Why are these problems being covered up? I did see 1 complaint on the FDA website and I added one as well. I also sent an e-mail to Johnson & Johnson. I have spent so much in Dr. visits, meds and now buying a new pair of glass plus prescription sunglasses because I cannot were contacts for a long time. I hope something can be done about these contacts!

Like many other posters here, I just searched online for "eye infection associated with Acuvue Oasys" and found this forum. I switched from AV Advance 2 to AV Oasys about 4 or 5 months ago because I my eyes felt slightly dry when wearing AV 2s. My eyes were fine for a couple of weeks, but I started having problems with my left eye/contact a few weeks after the switch (on vacation of all times). Within 2 to 4 hours of putting in my contacts, my left eye burns, itches and waters, and it feels like my contact is sticking to my eyelid. My eye will water like crazy after taking the contact out and usually be stuck together the next morning. It's just my left eye for some reason, not my right. I noticed I had bumps on the inside of my left upper eyelid. I switched cleaning solutions and method, thinking it may be protein build-up, but that has not helped. I have resorted to wearing my glasses every day, my contacts (if I really need/want to) for a few hours on random days. Also, I found out that my best friend's sister has been having the exact same eye problem in one of her eyes and that she also wears Acuvue Oasys contacts. She has switched to other contacts. I'll be finding a new brand/type very soon also.

It is so funny, cause i thought it was just me. I haven't been a contact wearer for very long, so I don't think my dr. takes me very seriously. He tried me with several lenses....all either acuvue advanced and now I've been wearing the oasys for a couple of months now. And they do me the same way....I have mainly one eye that my lids and corners itch and my vision is very blurred. He had told me that since I sit at a computer all day that I may not be able to wear contacts cause my eyes dry out, but these should help. And they did fine for a little while, but the last few times after a day of having them in I cannot see well at all. But it is an act of congress to get the dr to change brands. Why are the doctor's like this? Aren't we paying them a service?

I was contacted by a nurse from Johnson & Johnson about my entry on their website. I let her know that there are many people having problems with these contacts. Basically I was told not to believe you all. I suggest that anyone having problems with these contacts submit a comment on Johnson & Johnson's website and with the FDA. I was told by the FDA if there are more complaints they would look into the contacts. When I can go back to contacts, I will not be using Acuvue Oasys!!!!

I have been having a lot of problems with my eyes also.At first I thought it was my cleaner and I went to the E.R and they gave me Acular drops for an eye irritation and said to change cleaner. So I did but my eyes wouldstill hurt so I just started looking for recalls and found this sight and now I might have an answer to my problems. But like others I have doctor bills and have to have new contacts. Please someone let us all know if there is a case going along with this.I have the swelling, feeling that there is something in my eye.Wearing my glasses more, having trouble seeing.Itching, watery eyes, pain and oddly enough a bump9very small0 on the upper edge of my eye lid.And I had just opened a new pair and the simptons got worse.

Firstly, I would like to say that I've just purchased my first pair of Oasys lenses, and 3 hours in they are perfectly fine, so of course I have no idea what the outcome may be.
However, I must ask if I'm missing something here, surely, if you start experiencing pain, discomfort and gunk in your eyes, TAKE THE DAMN THINGS OUT IMMEDIATELY AND STOP WEARING THEM! I have little sympathy with people who continue to wear these lenses even after they notice side-affects. I will remove mine at the first sign of any trouble, and I'll seek my money and an exchange of lenses later. My vision has to come first and I can't afford to let it deteriorate any more than it has.

I too have had many of the same problems with both the Acuvue Advanced & Oasys lenses. I have finally self-diagnoised as an allergy to the sillicone in both these products and I never had problems in the 15 years previous. It doesn't appear to have done any permenant damage to my eye, however the damage to my job because of the constant missed time is another story. I wonder if anyone has filed a class action on this?

Found this page while searching for something else. I really hope somebody does do a class action suit for all you folks, because what you are looking at is the effects of planned obselescence. They are trying to force people to spend more money on new lenses every two weeks by making a lens that breaks down? Personally, I usually get six weeks to two months use out of a pair of extended wear contacts with no eye damage. I have been doing so, since extended wear contacts first came out. I have a few blood vessels growing toward the iris, but after 20+ years of contact lens wear that is to be expected, and it doesn't bother me. Not recommending it, but for a company to design a lens to break down while it is still in your eyes is criminal.
I did try a sample pair of oasys, did not like them. Wore them for some weeks anyway, until one developed a split on one edge! I thought that was really wierd. Glad to know why!

I just went to the eye doctor today for the same symptoms as people have written about. My vision has deteriorated and one eye is chronically red and irritated.
The doctor prescribed a very strong medication to get rid of the irritation.
These lenses may be great for some people, but I have been suffering with them for months. At least I realize that I'm not alone in this. Shame on Acuvue for not addressing the possible side effects that would have helped alleviate the frustration and trauma of wondering what was wrong with my eyes. Never had these problems prior to Acuvue.

I also have been suffering from the red eye, burning feeling. I kept wondering what was wrong with me. Finally went to the doctor who said that there is severe irritation to the cornea and that I need to take some very strong medication and stop wearing them period. My eyes have become more dry than ever and my vision has been altered. There should be a warning on the label of this product.

I am SO glad that I found this website!! This is ridiculous! I have been wearing contacts for 10 years. I switched to Acuvue Oasys and I have had constant irritation and itchiness in my right eye. I blamed it on acquired allergies and my travels through Europe. Yesterday my vision started to blur in my right eye. I took my contacts out, and it felt like I had a piece of sand stuck in my top eye lid. My eye hurt really bad, was extremely red and pourding with tears. I had to leave class. I was humiliated! I am throwing these lenses out as soon as I post this!

I've had contacts for about 7 years. Acuvue2 then Advance. I work in front of a computer all day, and my eyes dry out sometimes. My doctor suggested the Oasys to help alleviate this. I thought I was in heaven! They were so comfortable. About 2 months later I developed what I thought was pink eye, in my right eye. Burning, stinging, my eye constantly teared up, severe light sensitivity. I went to the doctor and he diagnosed me with corneal abrasions due to inflammation caused by eye allergies(Allergic conjunctivitis). He prescribed Tobrex and Optivar, which are antibiotics and anti-histamine. I used it for a week, and took some time off from work, and my eye cleared up. 2 weeks it's back in my left eye. Same process. Clears up, and it's back! I finally stumbled on this post. Wow! I changed out my contacts to Biofinities yesterday and my eye seems to be doing ok. All my issues started when I switched to Oasys.

Finding this has been amazing. I've worn contacts for years and have never had an issue until I started wearing these lenses. At first I thought I had pink eye or some other sort of eye infection but began to realize my eyes are always fine until I try to wear the contacts. I have a severe alleric reaction to them which includes extreme redness, itch, blurred vision, pain and pussy gooey eyes. After reading this and seeing the overwhelming responses I will be changing from this brand as soon as possible. I can't believe that doctors would not warn their patients of the possible effects of these lenses.

Unbelievable. I've been wearing contacts for 13 years without a problem. I switched to Oasys a little less than a year ago. Within a matter of weeks my eyes started to become extrememly dry and irritated. After being mis-diagnosed with a scratched cornea, they only continued to get worse. I thought I had pink eye, but those tests were negative as well. I couldn't drive, couldn't stare at the computer screen, couldn't be in sunlight. My eyes felt like someone had slashed them with needles. People at work always thought I was crying! Every morning I wake up to my eyes being glued shut and I'm constantly cleaning the muccous out of my eyelashes. Finally my eye doctor was out of town and I went to her fill-in. The woman looked terrified. I was told I had multiple ulcers in both eyes and had I waited any longer I likely would have gone blind. I was prescribed tobradex - a topical steroid to ease the ulcers. She told me it was due to me wearing them too often. So I bought a new pair of glasses and stopped wearing the contacts all together for awhile. When the ulcers finally cleared my normal eye doctor told me I should keep getting the Oasys and ordered me new ones (a new prescription since my eyesight was deteriorating). Within days of putting them back in, the symtems persisted. I was doing everything right! Taking them out after only wearing them for a few hours, Only wearing them a couple days a week. I bought new solution, rubbed them each night. Still, my eyes are dry and painful. My sinuses are out of control and my headaches put me to sleep each night.I have an appointment tomorrow and I will be bringing in a copy of these posts in hopes that she will allow me a different brand. But she seems to LOVE Oasys - likely because they charge so much more. Wish me luck and the best of luck to all of you. DO NOT BUY THESE CONTACTS!

How about that class action suit? Never have I been so strung out by pain in my eyes. The sick thing is I have no other option at the moment, because I have no glasses to wear in the interim and am otherwise unable to function without anything. Every night after I take these Oasys out I feel like my eyeballs and eyelids have been sliced. When I wake up I have to scrape the "goop" off my eyes in order to see. Why don't more people know about this?? By the way it took about three months for me to figure out what was going on>

I have been using Acuve2 for many years. I recently found a new eye Dr. and he recommended the Oasys contact lenses. I tried the trial pair and after about a week my left eye got extremely irritated. Also, my eyes felt heavy. It was really weird. I put my Acuve's back in and my eyes were fine. When I returned for my follow up, my Dr. seemed upset that I did not want the Oasys contact lense prescription. He said I just needed to get use to them and the discomfort and irritation would go away. I insisted that I wanted a prescription for the Acuves that I had. Reluctantly, he wrote the prescription stating they weren't the latest technology. After reading the posts, I'm glad that I didn't give in. Needless to say, I won't be returning to this doctor again.

Same thing with me. I had been wearing Acuvue 2 for many years, changed eye doctors, and was giving Oasys. Could only wear them 24 hours. My eyes were itchy and hurt. (all after only 24 hours). I went back to the Acuvue 2 and my eyes are still giving me a few problems after 2 weeks. Eye doctor said I must have an allergy to the silicone. Wow ... Has anybody had these sorts of problems with Bausch and Lomb Softlens products, as well? This all sounds like what I've just started going through! I've been a contact lens wearer for many years, and have even worn this brand for the past year -- but just started a new box, and have had nothing but infection after infection where my eye is glued shut, and so swollen, it looks like I've been hit. Of course, it's been variously diagnosed as viral, bacterial, allergies, etc.. Vigamox clears it up, mostly, but once I start wearing lenses again, it comes right back.

I do not believe this! After having gone thru numerous eye drops, I finally decided to see if it can be related to the Oasys I was wearing, and it seems like that was the cause!! My trouble is though, that I was on Oasys for over a year before I started to have the symptoms. Before that, I did have some dryness, but nothing major like red eyes and pus and lost vistion. Did anyone have a similar experience, like developing symptoms after a year of using them?

I haven't gotten an infection (yet) from the Oasys but I have noticed that after wearing them for a few hours my vision becomes really hazy -- like I'm looking through fog. Once I take them out, I noticed an increase in deposits on the Oasys contact. I've never had that problem before with my Acuvue 2's. I'm going on a study abroad next semester and the comments here are enough for me to switch to Acuvue 2 to avoid a problem. Anyone who has problems with the Oasys contacts should send J&J an email here: http://www.acuvue.com/ContactUs/ContactUs.jsp?subject=CONCERN

I had Acuvue II contacts lenses and then my doctor switched me to Oasys. After about three months, with no problem, my eye starts turning red. I ignore it at first because I noticed a rip in my contact. But then, my eyes turn bloodshot red. Turns out I have an eye infection. These contacts are problematic and aren't for everyone. Though the first time you try them your eyes feel very clear, that feeling soon goes away.

I had worn Acuvue 2s for three years. Two months ago I had an eye exam and was prescribed the Acuvue Hydraclear Plus lenses. After wearing these for approximately 3 weeks I began to experience redness and itching, thinking this may have been an issue with the solution I was using I switched to a different brand, but still experienced the same issue. After about a month I began to have increased pain and swelling along with reduction in vision and sensitivity to light. I visited my DO again and found that I had what looked like chemical burns to the lenses of the eye and was prescribed Torbadex while the burns healed. Subsequently I was put back on my original prescription.

I have been a contact lens wearer for many years now --starting with the GLASS ones, so you can imagine that my eyes can take a lot of battering. I used another brand of soft contacts for a long time until my doctor suggested that I tried Oasys. They felt great at first, so I bought an entire year's supply. From that point on, nothing but trouble. They feel fine the first two or three days of usage, and then irritation sets. They also lose their shape very quickly. I have been blaming my solution and switched brands several times, to no avail. I am very glad I found this site. My thanks to each and everyone for sharing.

I have to say it was a relief to see I wasn't alone in the pain associated with these lenses. However, I do belive it is a case by case issue. We are a very small portion of the population that is allergic to these. I know three people that wear these and love them. I also asked my eye dr. if anyone else had complained about them and she said I was the first one and if there were more than a few people coming to her with these problems she would not recommend them. Just wanted to let those people thinking of trying them out that it is possible you will love them and probably pretty rare that you will experience the pain and expense we are.

I started having eye problems shortly after starting to wear these contacts. I saw my doctor who thought initially that I was having allergy trouble and had an infection from this. Since I was nursing, I wasn't taking allergy medication and thought this was plausible. In addition, we had such a dry summer, more people were having allergy trouble. I continued to have swelling, sensativity to light, loss of vision, pain, etc. even when I would stop wearing the contacts. My eye doctor nor myself ever dreamed that it was the contacts. This went on for months. I would stop wearing my contacts then start again and everything would be fine for a while, then it would start back up. My doctor said there were white blood cells on my cornea, indictitive of an auto-immune disorder so I went through all kinds of blood tests with nothing definitive. Then one day my friend asked what kind of contacts I wore. When I told her Oasys, she said that she had worn them as well as her mother and both had problems. One eye doctor said that he had a lot of people have problems with Oasys. Once she stopped, she was fine. Thing is, I actually needed prednisone to get the swelling completely down. I then tried wearing my old Optima contacts. Guess what? No problems since then. I called J & J and their response was that it wasn't the contacts, but the multipurpose solution. I even pointed out that it says it is designed for silicon lenses. He tried to tell me that it is the combination of the two that bothers some people. What a load of crap. We need some attorney to file a class action lawsuit!

Wow, I am so glad I found this forum. I had no problems with contact lenses since I started wearing them when I was 17. I switched to the Acuvue Oasys when I was 21/22 or so and have been having problems ever since. I started to get eye infections frequently. I was told that I was not cleaning my contacts well enough and that I had eye allergies. I was put on Patanol, and that helped a bit. But before I could even put my contacts in my eyes in the morning, I would have to put in an over the counter "red-out" drops otherwise my eyes would be a bit red. But over the past year, I've been to the doctors over 5 times with eye infections. I was prescripted Vigamox, and it would clear everything up. But then as soon as I started wearing the contacts again, my eyes would get red and itchy. I'm in the process of now trying to get a new brand of contacts. I just hope I don't have any permanent eye damage from these contacts.

If you take them out every night you have nothing to worry about. Its the people that leave them in for the whole week that get diseases in their eyes. Just because it says you can leave it in doesn't mean you should. Do a little more research about leaving your contacts in before you blame a specific brand.

I wore one Acuve Oasis lens and one Baush and Lomb 66 lens for an astigmatism. I wore these for a few months and developed what I thought was pink eye. My eyes (both) itched and were red and dry. I threw them away and treated my eyes for pink eye for a week. When I put in the new pair of lenses, the same problems resulted. Then I went to the eye doctor to find out that my prescription went from about a -6 and -7 to a -9.25 and -9.50. I'm not sure if the vision loss is related but I think that I may definitely have been allergic to the lenses too!

Oh, thank God. I made the mistake of actually listening to the doctor that gave me my eye exam, who told me that the Oasis contacts were basically a more sturdy version of the Acuve II. Never once was I told that they were silicon based, which seems like a glasring omission. I have worn contacts for years, and I agreed to switch to the Oasis because the Acuvue II were not very sturdy. Like everyone else, they were fine for a few days, but then I started developing a red circle arund my pupil. I have never slept in them, and have gone through 7 pairs in a month, changing them out in the hope that a fresh pair would help. I am sitting here right now with my eye alomst swollen shut, with the inability to focus and very little vision in my right eye. I had them in for 3 1/2 hours yesterday afternoon, and I was awoken this morning by my right eye literally crying. I don't have insurance, so seeing a doctor isn't an option. But with what I have read here I just may have to scrounge up some cash so I don't go totally blind from an infection.

I went back to Acuvue 2. Just went to my eye exam and the dr wanted me to try Acuvue Advance (a "new" technology). Have had them in a day and starting to have problems. I also had the same symptoms that have been listed previously. I have worn contacts for 13 years and have never had a problem until Acuvue Oasis. I had to change back to my old brand of contacts and go on a steroid to clear up my eyes. My doctor actually questioned his Johnson & Johnson rep and the response was that they knew about it affecting "some" people. It sounds like it is doing more than affecting when you have to get a corneal transplant. I am frustrated that I now have to take out my contacts every night instead of sleeping in them for two weeks like I have in the past. I also would like to know if there is a class action law suit. They need to yank these off the market immediatly.

I also had these problemw sith Acuvue Oasys lenses. Pain, redness, dryness and deterioration of vision. I went to an opthamologist, who suspected either severe conjunctivitis or an allergy to the contact lenses. My cornea "looked like shower glass, or shatterproof glass through which somebody had fired a shotgun." I stopped wearing lenses and haven't worn them for about nine months, and now my corneas are back to normal.
I want to get back into lenses, but am certainly staying away from Acuvue Oasys. Has anybody heard of similar problems with Bausch and Lomb PureVision? I'm thinking of switching to those, and haven't seen any problems reported on the internet, but would be curious to know of any reports, as I believe they are also silicone-based lenses.

Reading the posts here is a relief. I've worn contacts for about 15 years, and I never had a problem until I started on the Acuvue Oasys in February 2006. The first problem I noticed is that even trying to take them off after an hour was difficult. These lenses stick to the cornea. This is a bigger problem than most might think because it means that bacteria can get trapped between the lens and your cornea, a potential cause of bacterial infections and corneal ulcerations. Also, I noticed that there's a slight lag in focus when I'm looking at far-objects and then near ones. To rule out presbyopia, I compared my old lenses with the Acuvue Oasys, and there were no problems with the old ones. So, this is a problem with the Acuvue Oasys. However, the real problem is my optometrist. She's considered one of the best in Boston, and she's fantastic. She let me try a lot of different lenses, but she really pushed me to go with the Acuvue Oasys. I've read similar stories in some of the earlier posts, so I'm wondering if J&J have some type of incentive scheme going. The bottom line is this, if you have neovascularization, consider changing your lenses to a more "breathable type". However, if the lenses are adhering fairly tightly to your eyes, do not use that type of lens. Some people have suggested that the problem is due to improper handling/cleaning of the lens. That might be true. However, even if you handle your lenses properly, lenses that adhere tightly to your cornea will dramatically increase the chances of an infection or ulceration.

They were ok the first day but after the second day they get extremely cloudy and make my eyes itchy and gooey. My doctors said it is the solution I am using even though they are the ones that gave me the solution. I called them several times and told them I do not like these lenses and I want acuvue 2 again and they keep giving me the run around.

Oh wow...I'm glad I found this site. When I became pregnant, I developed contact lens intolerance (which is quite normal). However, after I gave birth, and even 4 months after I quit breastfeeding, I still can't wear contacts. My eyes turn extremely red and dry within an hour after wearing the Accuvue Oasys. I used to wear the Acuvue Advance without any problems, but then I switched to Oasys. Now I'm starting to think maybe there is a problem with the Oasys. I just thought my eyes changed permanently from being pregnant, but now I'm starting to wonder. None of the eye doctors know why I have this problem and they all said I can't wear contacts anymore, so I've been wearing glasses for more than a year now. I think I will try an old pair of my Advance contacts for a little bit and see what happens with my eyes.

I'm so glad I found this site. My optometrist gave me a trial pair of Cooper Vision silicon lens. I've worn them 4 times and get red irritated eyes aferwards. The first day was fine. The 2nd and 3rd day worse. I wore them for 90 minutes today and after I took them out I'm back to red eyes again. Like someone mentioned, I find they really stick to my eyes and are hard to remove. I previously wore Accuvue 1 and never had a problem. I'm wondering if it is a combination of the silicon and solution, because the first day was fine. It was after a night in the lens case that I really noticed problems.

I'm so glad that I, too, found this site!!! I went to the eye doctor two days ago because I needed my contact lens Rx renewed. After seeing the doctor, I was referred to the Contact Lens lab. I have been wearing Acuvue 2 for 2-1/2 years (have been wearing soft contacts for 30 years). The doctor said I needed a lens that would provide more oxygen for my eye so I told this to the contact lens technician and he gave me a trial of Acuvue 2 in my new Rx and an Acuvue Oasys. I put the Oasys in yesterday monring and noticed within an hour that my vision was all blurry and the lens felt in the old days when there was protein deposit buildup. I wore the Oasys again today and my vision was worse -- like looking through fog -- even with rewetting drops. When I first began wearing contact lenses in 1978, I developed allergy symptoms to the solution preservatives(conjunctivitis and the same symptoms as have been described here). I have discovered that I am allergic to Thimerisol and Ededate Disodium, so I read the labels on all the solutions avoid those two ingredients. The Oasys produced the same feeling that I felt way back then so I am fairly certain it is an allergy. So, after reading what everyone has written, I took the Oasys out, put my glasses back on and am going back to my Acuvue 2 tomorrow -- thank you all for your input!!!!

In response to Danielle's post: I also began wearing Acuvue Oasys in 2006, and they were great! I had eye strain issues related to extended computer use, and they really helped. But then, a year later in 2007, I had my prescription refilled, and the following 4 months were complete hell for me. I suffered from swollen lids, bloodshot eyes, and sensitivity to light, plus gumminess and some kind of discharge. I went to multiple ophthalmologists and optometrists, with one who finally noted that I had bumps under my eyelids, indicating an allergic reaction of some kind to my contacts. I had been diagnosed with GPC, EKC, everything. My original optometrist then switched me to Focus Dailies - in case the problems WERE caused by an infection. A year later, I decided to try the Oasys again, since the Dailies were more expensive - and after the first day my eyes are beginning to show signs of irritation. So now I'm switching to Acuvue 2. Fingers crossed for a better experience. I've never had any eye issues until the 2007 Oasys incident. They must have changed their composition or upped the silicone or SOMETHING. The product was great at first.

This thread is very interesting. I took a break from contacts after buying new glasses last year. Up until then, I had only been trying contacts for a few months. I was on Freguency 55's mostly (first pair was original acuvue, I think), and wasn't totally satisfied, so my doctor gave me a pair of the Acuvue Oasys. From what I remember, they were great. Probably the best I've tried. I wore two or three pairs of them. I am just now deciding to go back to contacts. I was going to order some of the Acuvue Oasys ones, but after a little digging, I found this page of responses. I am shocked, and also concerned. I loved them, but some of the sypmtoms listed here are vaguely familiar. I always thought that it was normal lens discomfort. I mean, I was pretty new to contacts, anyway. There was never really any major problem that I can remember, just a few little annoying experiences like dryness, blurriness and some discomfort. Should I think twice about trying these again? I mean, what IS normal and not normal when it comes to wearing contacts?

okay, add me to the list. I look like my eyes are gonna bleed this morning and I have the glue thing too. So today, I will wear my glasses all day. I too, am a longtime lense wearer. I even used to wear the hard gas permeable lenses and they were more comfortable than these! Everyone should complain to Johnson and Johnson, the makers - and the FDA!

Same story here - was a very happy Acuvue 2 wearer for many years with no problems other than occassional discomfort (which I expect given that you have a piece of plastic in your eye). I went to get a new supply and had the Oasis contacts recommended to me. I tried them out, was quite impressed at first, then the irritation began. The ulcer came next, I made it through the treatments and got better, then began to wear the lenses again, and what do you know the irritation is back within just a few days. I am making the switch back now before things get worse.

I am glad I found this site. I was given a trial pair and noticed my vision getting foggy with the Oasys as well as my eyes getting teary at the end of the first day. Like many, I thought it was just me. The second day, I remember feeling like needles were poking one of my eyes for a few seconds. I have worn the Acuvue 1 in the past but my eyes get dried out during the second half of the day. I am sure glad I stumbled upon this site. I sure don't want a scratched cornea, eye infections, nor loss of vision! I'll see if I can get the Acuvue 2 instead of the Oasys.

I cant believe what I am reading! I have been in a state of confusion for the last 2.5 months unable to wear my acuvue oasys lenses for all of the same symptoms you describe, itchiness, redness, goopy eyes and irritated cornea. Ive been to the doc 4 x and on my third eye drop! Ive been wearing lenses for 10yrs and acuvue brand for the last 3 yrs. I switched to oasys 9 months ago and obviously am having some type of reaction. My co-worker also had the same experience and had to switch from the oasys. Very interesting that the ophthalmologist has no knowledge of this and blames it on "allergies" What a waste of money! one of my scripts cost 90.00!! with insurance!

I have been having the same trouble as all of you folks since making the switch to oasys a year ago. I would love to see a class-action lawsuit on this. I wore acuvue and acuvue 2s for over a decade with no problems. About 4 months after the switch, my eyes started feeling swollen and started getting very red. I have not been able to wear the Oasys contacts for more than an hour at a time since. The upside is that I am much more used to wearing glasses now...
I went ahead and did some research into the opthamology journals on these things. The research bears us all out. You can check it at http://studymyhealth.wordpress.com

I too use Acuvue 2 for about 13 years and then the doctor said it was 'time to change to something better..' haha.. the Oasys felt fine but after 3 trips to 3 different doctors, I have a corneal ulcer. I didn't even know that was possible. I know it's due to the contacts... I have went 24 years with having absolutely no eye problems, except for pink eye once or twice that would clear up almost instantaneously with eye drops. This is awful. How many people are they going to keep hurting?

Thanks everybody for posting, I am really glad I found this thread. My story is similar to many others: I am 44 yo, have been wearing contacts for close to 20 years without ever having any problems. Have been using Johnson and Johnson products for the past 15 years: Acuvue, then Advance, loved them. I am compulsive about following the guidelines as I am a radiologist and my vision is my lifelihood. Never sleep wearing my lenses. In February of 2008, after an unusual insistence by an optometrist, I switched to Oasys. I developed a corneal ulcer in my left eye in June of 2008. The ulcer quicky healed using Zymar antibiotic drops. I became more meticulous than ever changing my solution etc. and wore glasses frequently. The corneal ulcer recurred in early July. This time around, still no progress using antibiotic drops and wearing glasses. Hope the ulcer heals eventually, needless to say I am switching to a different contacts, and the optometrist is a history. I am sticking to the ophtalmologist who is trying to help me sort out this mess. I agree with other people's suspicion that there must be some incentive plan in place, the way the guy was pushing Oasys was unusually aggressive.

I have worn acuvue extended wear lenses very successfully for over 20 years. I had a routine in which I would rinse my eyes with saline before going to bed and in the morning. This allowed the lenses to remain fresh and clear throughout the wear cycle. Recently (I'm now 61) I noticed an increase in dryness, not excessive, so I mentioned it to my optometrist so he suggested that I try Oasis on a trial basis. Well, two days later and the trial is over! That's how long they took to cloud over. The issue is that I believe they are too thick to allow protein and normal corneal debris to filter out from between the lense and eye surface. Whereas the regular acuvue's are thin enough to allow for fluid circulation, the oasis traps fluid for oxygen penetration but also prevents debris from circulating. I went back to acuvues. I commend my optometrist for insisting on a trial period, as it was very necessary.

all I can say is 'ditto, ditto!'. I developed a corneal ulcer from my trial pair of acuvue oasys, but thought it was my fault for falling asleep in them while watching TV. did a bout of steroid/antibiotic drops, then resumed wearing them after my eye healed. then I took advantage of a glasses discount at Pearle with the purchase of a year's supply of contacts, BUT two weeks into wearing them, I'm having the blurry vision, weepy/gunky/crusty eye thing that so many here are describing; and I'm going back to the eye doctor tomorrow because it feels like I have a new corneal ulcer in the other eye. I'm thinking about wearing gas perms again. never had a problem with those - and one pair lasts a year!

Now, My eyes are completely recovered. Last week, I started to wear a new pair of Oasys again. The first few days, it was fine. And today, my eyes turn red again, and it starts to irritate me.. I bet I am allergic to Oasys too !!

Like so many others here I am relieved to read all of the problem posts. I've worn contacts since I was 13 and I am now 36. I've never had problems until I started with Oasys. I had two styes and then an infection in my iris in the first 2 months. My eyes became really red and the doctor said I had slight inflammation of my eyeball. She suggested my eyes were growing sensitive to contacts and I might have to stop wearing and gave me allergy eye drops. It hasn't helped. I can only wear the contacts about 4 hours a week now - which I save for surfing or cycling. I guess I need to go back to my old brand. thanks everyone

It is 4AM on 12-10-08 and I just got Acuvue Oasys lenses ONE WEEK ago. I started out wearing Bausch & Lomb U3 lenses in July 1979. In December 1988
I was given the original Acuvue lenses--they had just come on the market. I subsequently tried Acuvue
2's about 5 years ago, because they came in colors. I could not wear the
8.3 or the 8.7 as one was too loose and sunk to the bottom of my eye, and the other was too tight. So back to the original Acuvue's. I NEVER had a
problem with any lens before except for the Acuvue 2's not fitting me properly. So much for colored lenses. Well, after reading all of these comments,
I am not putting these horrible
Oasys lenses in my eyes again. The
right lens tore at the edge after 6 days, and it is practically impossible
to take them out of my eyes--it's as if they are glued on. My eyes are already very irritated and burning! And like a lot of you have stated, the
O.D. (who was very highly recommended by my ophthalmologist) was really pushing these silicone lenses. I think I probably am allergic to the silicone; I also have an allergic reaction to LATEX gloves. I think
there is something really unsafe about
this so-called "better for your eye
because it allows much more oxygen to
reach your cornea" lens. The rigid
quality and the thickness also bother
me quite a bit. Just because something is new and is the latest technology DOES NOT mean it's better
than something that's been around for
a long time--with a proven track record. I will not wear silicone lenses made by any mfr.

Like Diane, I have tried the Coopervision brand contacts, Avaira. It has actually been less than a week and I'm already having a strong reaction to the lenses. I have been wearing contacts for almost 20 years and always clean them every night but these lenses elicit a response like nothing I have ever experienced. My eyes are itchy, swollen, and producing excessive amounts of mucous. I contacted the optometrist and he recommended that I come in because it could be an allergic reaction (like it is anything else?). It is unfortunate that these lenses are causing such a reaction given their purported benefits but I am not going to risk my eyesight.

I'm so glad I came across this forum! I've been wearing contacts for almost 10 years and have never had problems. I am young (23) and have always had very healthy eyes...that is, until I started wearing Acuvue Oasys a few months ago. I could never keep them in for long and they scratched and tore easily. But the tip of the iceberg was a few days ago when I lost vision in my right eye. My ophthalmologist said it cannot be fixed with a stronger prescription because the vision itself is blurry, and there might be damage to my optic nerve. I am now 100% on glasses. I have another appointment with my ophthalmologist tomorrow to discuss my next steps, which seem like they are going to be extensive (and expensive). I am likely going to have to meet with a neuro-ophthalmologist. I didn't think there was a connection between my eye problem and these contacts until I saw that many people have had similar problems. Let's hope these things are recalled soon! And let's hope we all get our regular eyesight back, as well.

Add me to the list. Except I am wearing Acuvue Advance silcone hydrogels. I have worn lenses with no problems for 20 years (gas permeable), and changed to soft lenses a year ago. Abpprox 3 months ago started developing a number of the symptoms everyone describes above. Main issue, redness, both eyes worse in the right, dryness ++ esp right eye, and my eyes are hot..from inflammation. Optometrist looked at my eyes, could not believe how red my eyelids were, but blamed solutions, allergy (no itch, no other allergic symptoms), and my computer use. I thought I was going mad, but knew that none of those seemed likely. I have stayed off the lenses for periods of time over the last 3 months and it seems that it is taking longer and longer for the redness and inflammation to settle. My vision has also disimproved, but I had no idea it could be secondary to these lenses. Agh. Again optometrist has excellent rep, but totally refuted idea that I may have an allergy to the lenses. Will discuss with her asap!

I have been wearing Acuvue Oasys for about 2 years now. I've been dealing with issues on and off for the entire time, wondering what I was doing wrong. First I had an ulcerated cornea (was told I didn't clean my contacts well enough), then I had "irritation" which turned very quickly into Eyeritis, then that returned, and now in addition to that I have blufferities. (sorry if I dodn't have the exact terms or spellings). I wear my glasses more than half of the time, and take my contacts out at the sight or feeling of anything unusual. My husband has been having issues, my friend and her coworker have been having issues, and guess what? We all have Acuvue Oasys. I'm finding this very strange and scarey.

I started having problems with itching, severe swelling of my eyes, tearing, pain, blurred vision, etc. My doctor said it looks like I have Thygessons Disorder. He gave me a prescription of a steroid that would help take away the pain(severe), swelling, etc. He said it would take a while for my eyes to heal and to wear my glasses until then. It has been over 3months since I have worn lenes. I got new lenses today have worn them for 5 hours and I am having an all over reaction to them. I have had to take allergy medacine to stop the itching, swelling, redness, etc. I also have itching all over my body and some small welps on my skin. Even my ears are itching inside. I'm having some itching in the back of my throught. I am never going to wear these lenes again. I can't believe they are selling something that can have these types of side effects. My vision has stayed blurred every since I wore them the first time.

I just began wearing contacts this last July. I was given the AVAIRA silicone hydrogels which my optometrist claimed were a better shape for my eye than Acuvue and that they were the most comfortable ones she had and the only ones she currently wore. I wonder if she has experienced the burning, itching, blurry vision, and inflammation that I have. I thought that maybe it was allergies or just irritation from exposure to all the dust and dander in the stable where I work. I went to my optometrist and was immediately sent to the Illinois eye institute which told me that I had an infection and that they would not be able to tell me much more until I had gotten rid of it with antibiotic drops for my viral infection (sound strange to anyone else?). They told me that my the surface of my eye had ridges on it and was no longer flat, which caused the low spots to become overly dry and triggered extreme light sensitivity. They actually told me to wear my contacts for 2-3 hours a day using artificial tears often to help hold moisture on the dry spots on my eye surface. After weeks of zero contact use my vision returned to normal. And four days of contacts sent me right back to where I started. Another optometrist told me that he had a patient with similar symptoms that had cessated with contacts that are not silicon hydrogels. Hoping I get better soon and that Acuvue 2 will work for me.

Has anyone out there just had the vision problems with dizziness and a sense that everything was overly focused with the Oasys. My opthomologist switched me to a lower prescription saying that the doctor at the optical store gave me too strong of a prescription. I put in the new ones and hours later am having the same symptoms, but never itchy burny...just vision problems. I used to wear Acuvue 2 for years and years and NEVER had a problem...Anyone feel these same feelings..HELP!!

Wow, I am so glad I found this. For the past 6 months or so I have been getting a red ring around my pupils and my eyes burn a lot. I also get very sensitive to light to the point that it is hard for me to keep my eyes open in class. I thought that maybe it was the solution or I left my contacts in too long but I had never had this before I started using Oasys. I finally decided to Google it and I found this thread. I am definitely going to change my contact brand ASAP!!!

Totally agree with everyone about the problems with Acuvue Oasys. I got these last month and in the office they felt great, about the 2 day I started to get a discharge from both my eyes. Itchy eyes, felt like allergies. After wearing my glasses a couple days I was fine, put them back in again - bam! Same thing. I went back to my opt. and he told me the size was correct and gave me another one, went back to my old eye care solution, nothing worked. I'm letting my eyes rest for 3 days then trying again. It's defanitely the contacts, my third pair and the symptoms are the same on all.
I have been wearing contacts since I was 12, thats 28 years ago. These lenses are horrible for me, if you can wear these crappy things then you must have eyes of steel.
Switching back to my Acuvue 2s right away! Read these posts J&J - recall these lenses now before you do any more damage to peoples eyes.

I had Acuvue 2 for years and they were great. I wore Oasys for about 3 month and noticed my eyes getting drier. I eventually had to stop wearing them because I was having pain in my eyes... like a pressure on the eyeball followed by a headache. I went through a cycle of drops and medication and just wearing glasses. Now when I do decide to try my contacts I get a slight stinging sensation when I put them in and they make me dizzy. I also switched solutions and am currently using clear care which I love. Could this be a reaction to the silicon????

WOW! I just found this site. I am slowly recovering from severe ulcer on my cornea but now have permenant vision loss and damage to my cornea. I was wearing contacts. I had new packages of Acuve Aqua, and Air Optix so I am not positive which i was wearing . Are Air optix also the same problematic material. All these symptoms Ive read match my experience. I was told it was likely somthing getting under my contacts but now I believe it was the contact lense itself. What can I do about this? I have tons of contacts that i cant use and they were expensive. Is there any way I can go up against this company for ruining my eyes. I also wore contacts for decades previous with no problems !!

Oh my Lord! I am so glad that I found this site, I just wish that I had found it before my doctor recommended the Oasys. I have severe scarring on my cornea and am currently not a candidate for Lasik due the damage from switching to the Oasys lenses. Has anyone thought about looking into a law suit to get these contacts off the market. I used Acuvue 2 for years as well and I was fine. All of us have similar stories and honestly I am upset that the Optometrists are still prescribing them!

I would like to thank everyone for posting these comments. I think that I may have the answer to my problem. I have been wearing contacts since the late 70's. I started with soft lenses in the 70's when they were new, then switched to rigid gas permeable in the 80's and have been wearing them ever since. In January '09, I decided that I'd do myself a favor and switch back to soft disposable lenses. I was prescribed the Oasys brand. I thought I picked up an infection called blepharitis. I have tried baby shampoo, warm compresses, fresh makeup, etc... for the discharge from the corners of my eyes. My eyelids feel like they are on fire and look blistery. The inside corners itch like crazy. My skin around my eyes looks very old now. I went to the doctor this week (which means that I have had this for going on 3 1/2 months). I was given Augmentin and Tobrex to clear the infection and was told not to wear contacts for 10 days. They were starting to feel a bit better. However, I was going out somewhere special and wanted to look nice, so I put in a fresh pair of lenses. 4 hours later the symptoms started again. That is when I thought that maybe it was the lenses...and that (thank goodness) is how I found everyone's posts. I say there should be a class action lawsuit. I can't believe that these are still on the market. I hope my eyes get better and I am able to go back to the rigid gas permeable.

Before you wear any silicone hydrogel lenses, you should read this article. Certain types of lens solution cause a reaction with the lens that causes corneal staining. http://www.clspectrum.com/article.aspx?article=100406

Hopefully this will take you general info about class action lawsuits. Ok, it seems that on this site that people started a suit against Blockbuster for overcharging on late video returns. This is our eyes and vision. People have had cornea transplants! Unfortunately, I do not know how to contact them or anyone on here. I read somewhere else that you need a minimum of 5 people to start a suit. I'm sure that you would need all receipts and documentation by doctors confirming your problem. You would probably have to be willing to travel to testify?? I don't know how many people check back on this site to see this. People check facebook and myspace everyday. Maybe we should join together on something to see if we can get something going on these contact lenses.

I started wearing Acuvue Oasys 8/2006 and had absolutely NO problems with them at all. I was given a years supply with the instructions to change them every 2 weeks. Since I did not use them every day those initial boxes lasted for over 2 years and fell within the expiration date. 2/2009 I received new boxes now with the instructions that they could be worn for 1 month. I had the old ones in the day before my exam and they felt comfortable. The day after my exam I put the new ones in and have had problems ever since. My eyes are red, burning and itching and feel swollen. I can no longer wear them for longs periods of time. The old ones I wore could stay in for 16 hrs and I would forget they were in. My thought is that they have changed the formula or maybe have a sub-standard grade of silicone.
Also disturbing to me was that my new boxes had Japenese/Chinese writing that my initial boxes did not. It made me wonder about where they are being produced. Is this just to cover multiple cultures or are they being made elsewhere? My plan is to call the 800 number listed for Acuvue to try to get some answers to my questions. I don't hold out much hope that they will provide any but I will post it.

I'm also having Oasys difficulties and have just abandoned them. I've been wearing Acuvue Advance happily for some time but switched to Oasys on the grounds that they were better for my eye health. After two days my right eye, which tends to be the first one to react to any problem, became very dry and uncomfortable, which I thought was due to tiredness and overwork. I went back to glasses for a couple of days and then persevered with the lenses for a week. The right eye was still uncomfortable and dry so I switched to a 'flatter' lens. After a couple of days I was getting conjunctivitis in my left eye which is very unusual. I went lens-free for five days while having antibiotic treatment until my eyes were better. I put the Oasys back in again today and after three hours my right eye has started flaring up. I'm disappointed as they sounded a good option and I've gone back to my Acuvue Advance.

I've read several prior comments and have found people are having the exact same problems that I've been having with Oasys brand Acuvue contact lenes. I thought it was something else but I stopped wearing them for a full month and the conditions went away. Just yesterday I tried on a fresh pair and within 2 hours my eye sockets were itchy as hell as well as being dry. If I had left them in any longer I would have had the crusty eyes in the morning. How has this material found its way into the market? Its like back in the 80's when a Contact Solution product was using a mercurial ingredient that seriously screwed up my eyes. That product was removed from the shelves. To this day I wonder if there was ever any litigating involvement.

I'm guessing that many of these early comments come from the USA but I'm in the UK, and I'm wondering whether we've got the lenses later over here - can anyone comment? I was recommended the lenses by the optician dept of the most well-known and trusted high-street chemist in the UK. I've emailed them to express my concern. And they're selling them on-line. Are there any other UK users here who have similar stories?

Someone has commented on the influence of solutions: I’m using a preservative-free peroxide solution and have been for many years. A number of people have mentioned blurring and deterioration of vision, which is exceptionally worrying. I wore these lenses for a very short time but I also found my vision going in and out of focus. I put the blurriness down to extreme tiredness and sitting for too long in front of the computer screen, which is a reasonable explanation. That said, I don’t recall this happening in such a noticeable way other soft lenses.

I believe they either changed the formulation of the oasys contact, or where & how they are manufactured.
I suspect these new batches may come from China - no proof, just a hunch, based on all the toxic garbage China has sent over here in the past year.
I have successfully worn Oasys for over a year, been a contact lens wearer for over 10 years, and this last box caused problems from day one.
My eyes were perfectly fine with the pair I had worn pretty constantly for over 9 months, then the new ones made my eyes blood red, burning, stinging, itching, sensitive and super irritated within hours of putting them in my eyes.
I stopped wearing them, and 4 weeks later, my eyes were still blood red and painful.
My Optometrist thought I had "eye allergies" since there was no injury to my eye or cornea.
I am going to suggest to him that they have changed something about the contacts, since so many are having the exact same problems right from the get-go with these lenses.
Did anyone save their boxes from the pre-Chinese writing to compare with the current boxes?
Of course, J&J won't admit to any changes.

My experience with Acuvue Oasys: goop in my eye, pressure in my eyes, sensitivity to light, development of blood shot eyes, and, if i left them in overnight, my eyes would be sealed shut with goop.
I am going to my doctor today and I am going to ask to go back to my previous brand of which i had no problems!
J & J needs to do some research into this--clearly, there is something happening with these lens!!!

I have worn contacts for over 15 years with no problems at all. Then I've tried Acuvue Oasys and after a month my eyes were itchy after few hours of wearing them (even with a brand new pair). After removing them, I felt cutting which disappeared after an hour or so. I've tried blink drops, hoping the discomfort had been caused by the dry eyes, but it made it even worse. I went to my optician and have been told it was an eye infection and it didn't have nothing to do with the lenses.
I am so glad I found this site and quite annoyed with my optician who clearly had no idea what's going on in the world around those lenses!

I have been using Focus Dailies for years. Although, once in a while I'd have one that just didn't seem to sit right on the eye, my overall experience was good and often left them in for much longer than a day.
I recently had a new eye exam from a different doctor and was given Oasys lenses. The first 8 hours or so were great, but then my eyes started watering. After a while my eyes were so irritated that I had to remove the lenses. My left eye kept watering for a couple days. Thinking that the first set may have been defective, I tried another set when the new ones arrived. Same thing happened. I couldn't wear them more than about 8 hours. Thinking that it may have something to do with an allergic reaction to an ingredient in the lens, I did a search for "senofilcon Allergy" and ended up here. I'm going back to the Focus Dailies. Aren't eye doctors supposed to know of these posiblities and test patients for allergic reactions? It's amazing to me that people have had issues with this since 2007, yet there was no mention of it from an eye doctor. I would have been better off without being required to get a new eye exam. So much for the effectiveness of the FDA.

I have been incredibly frustrated with my eyes for the last several years. I was prescribed Oasys when it first came out, and within several months, I developed an infection, then an ulcer, then keratitis. I was then switched to Extreme H20, another brand of silicone lenses. Every few weeks, my eyes have been irritated, red, and puffy. My right eye vision became blurred. I went to several eye doctors who all told me I was having irritation from wearing contacts too much and given several brands of eye drop steroids. I have never slept in my contacts and never had a problem before switching to the silicone lenses.
I have spent the last several months dreading another trip to the eye doctor, tired of hearing the same diagnosis every time. I finally had my appointment today (with another new doctor) and was told there is a new study showing that 14% of silicone hydrogel contact lens users are allergic to the silicone.
I should have trusted my gut months ago and stopped using this product. Everyone should be warned about the possible dangers of silicone lenses. I only hope that the latest high dosage of eye steroids will clear the blurred vision in my right eye and finally stop this insane irritation. I definitely believe a class action law suit is in order. What is more insane to me is the amount of optometrists and opthamologists who are clearly pedaling Oasys and Extreme to their patients. Surely most eye clinics were receiving these complaints while the doctors busily told their patients that everyone loved the product.

A year ago my doctor put me in Acuvue Oasis. Immediately developed eye infections along with cysts all over my face. One month, four different doctors and several hundred dollars later, I determined
the contacts were the source of my problem. Within 24 hours after removing them, symptoms (including cysts) were gone. I wore Focus Night and Day until two weeks ago. Upon reordering, I received Air Optix Aqua, with a note indicating Ciba Vision has replaced Focus Night and Day with the Air Optix Aqua. Within 2 hours of inserting my new lens, I experienced the same problems as with the Acuvue Oasis lens.

I wished I had found this site earlier, but better late than never! I have been using the Oasys for about 1 month now and since the switch to the "better for you" lenses, have been having trouble with eyes ever since. (It was fine the first few days.) Symptons included extremely extremely itchy eyes, esp. after taking them out, pink eyes, constant tearing, and a feeling that sand or debris is constantly in the eye no matter what I do. It's definitely not the solution b/c I've been using it for years with the previous contacts. We all should contact the FDA (Food & Drug Administration), FTC (Federal Trade Commission -- for consumer rights), state government, Board of Optometry, to report this issue.

My wife tried Oasys for three days. Something was off the second day, uncomfortable, and then the third day, eyes swelling and red, redness of the skin outside the corners of her eyes, and then her ears also started to redden and swell. Within a few more hours she started having a full body allergic reaction, itching everywhere and feeling ill. I think she's lucky to have these reactions so early in the game because it caused me to search on Acuvue problems and I found this site. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences. It's time to pull these lenses off the market.

I have never had these kinds of problems from contacts and I have worn them for decades. I'm really glad I found this post. I have been wearing the acuvue advance for a couple of years, and I loved them. A couple of days ago, I went to the eye doc and he told me the oasys were now available for people with astigmatism. I just thought "whatever, I like acuvue." When i first put the oasys in, I couldn't tell a difference from the advance. At first I thought, "okay, these are fine." Luckily, they were just a trial pair, and the doc doesn't want to see me until next week. But as the evening wore on, my eyelids started to burn. Finally, I took the contacts out, but the wierd thing is, my eyelids still stung, even after I took them out. Since my doc said they were better, I gave them a second chance the next day at work. They bugged me all day and once again, my eyelids burned at night after I took them out. The next day, I put in a pair of my advance...I had a couple of pairs left, and they felt better. I'm so glad I found these posts. I kept thinking it was just me. I was even going to try again tomorrow, thinking I would get used to them, but I think I'll stick with the advance. Honestly, why do doctors want to change something when it's working? If it ain't broke, don't fix it! If someone likes the advance or the acuvue II, then leave it alone! I'm so mad at my doc for messing with my contacts. Honestly, even today, my eyes still sting a little bit from those stupid oasys! I like the advance! I can see! They don't bug me! Why mess with that? WHY? I'm paying this person. Do the doctors get a cut of every oasys sale they make? My doc didn't even ask! He just said, "we should get you into the oasis, it's better."
No, it's not.
No, it's not.

Hi,
I'm so mad I didn't find this site sooner. I am experiencing the same thing. It's 2 am and I'm in glasses with an infection/severe irritation due to Oasys. I've worn contacts for 18 years with no problems until 1 month ago when I started the Oasys. I had to be admitted to the hospital 3 weeks ago for severe pain/inflammation, it felt like my eyes were burning..it hurt so bad I couldn't open or close them. I was in so much pain. The hospital treated me for an eye infection and gave me antibiotics which I took for several days and my eyes got better. I had ordered a whole years worth of those stupid oasys and didn't know any better and put them back in my eyes. 4 days later, my eyes were red, irritated and this time really swollen. I went back to the doctor today and was told that I don't have an infection but severe eye irritation. He is making me continue the antibiotics anyway as a precaution but now I have to put drops in my eyes 4 times a day and it's still very very dry. I feel like crying I'm so mad at myself for not taking the contacts out sooner even though I noticed that they were very dry from the first couple of days. I trusted that my optometrist knew best, he was very pushy and said the Oasys were much better.
I'm so angry having read all these posts because I could have prevented this if I did more research. I have been wearing glasses for over 3 weeks and my eyes feel like they are permanently damaged. I'm so sad. I wish I had never gone to that optometrist.
all this time, I thought it was me. I can't begin to tell you how much trouble this ordeal has been for me. I will go back to my optometrist tomorrow and demand he switch me back and tell him of this website!

Like so many others, I am so glad to have found this site! I have been in contacts for 23+ years and have never had problems until about 4 months ago. I was switched to Oasys 2 years ago from Acuvue 2 because my eyes were dry and these would help with that. I loved these lenses for the first 1.5 years but then almost overnight my eyes started having problems. I had 2 Styes back to back, there was some redness, some discharge, they were itchy (worse right after I took out my contacts), they burned, blurred vision in the right eye, and just about all of the other symptoms people have written about on here. I was first diagnosed with a slight infection and did a 2 week course of antibiotics and minimal contact usage. Problems mostly went away and I was back in my contacts full time. After 3 days, same problems. Went back to the doctor who gave me a more thorough exam and suggested trying different cleaning and storage solution, to see if that was the problem. She had me use wetting drops 3x a day and nighttime ointment for dryness (yuk). After a full week out of my lenses completely, my eyes felt better but they were still bloodshot, something I attributed to using my glasses which I NEVER used outside of the house until this all started. Well, 4 days back in my contacts and all of the symptoms came back again. I only have 1 pair of Oasys left before my appointment and you can be sure I'm not asking for those again!
Best of luck to everyone on here! I hope you all have better luck with other brands and don't have any permanent damage (which I'm afraid I might since my right eye is always blurry now).

My eye doctor has been stalling. I have had the same painful eyes as everyone else. Have had contacts for 40 years and no problems with Acuvue advance. A month after the Oasys my eyes were so sore I couldn't stand sunlight either. This was after 3 days of glasses. My vision got blurry in my left eye. We need to find a lawyer...

I have had contacts for 7 years and have used acuvue advance. 2 weeks ago I was switched over to Oasys. At first, they were fine. Then at night they would often start to hurt really bad, feeling dry and itchy. I went back to the doctor and didnt mention this becuase i thought maybe it wasnt the contacts and it was my fault for not cleaning them and wearing them for long hours(yes very stupid of me). my eyes are KILLING ME. i am not putting these back in my eyes after reading everyones expierences. I am going back to the doctor tomorrow i hope if they can fit me in. good thing i have a case of my old brand left.

I have worn contact lenses for 25 years. Wesley/Jenssen until about 3 years ago when I was switched to Oasys. Initially, no problems. After eye exam last August, was given new set of lenses. Beginning of November I changed into a new pair, after about a month of wear. Was living in Hawaii at time. After 2 days, my left eye became red and swollen, tearing constantly. Acted and looked like "pink eye." I started with a topical antibiotic. Continued for several days, increasingly worse. Couldn't wear lens in eye. Went to optometrist. He immediately proscribed Vigamoxx. Made appointment with opthomologist (sp). He prescribed other antibiotics. Took cultures and sent me to retinal specialist. He also did cultures. Sent me to another specialist who did 2 biopsies and 10 cultures at once. Nothing grew out on cultures and biopsies were negative. Infection didn't clear up and moved into posterior chamber of eye. Injection of antibiotics in inner eye cured that infection, but anterior chamber (front of eye) continued. Nothing worked. Infection eventually destroyed pupil and cornea. I no longer have sight in left eye due to infection. Looking for attorney to represent me in products liability action against Johnson & Johnson. If anyone knows of any attorney's preparing such litigation, please contact me at ricktucker1@hotmail.com

I just found your posts and wanted to add my own. I have been a contact wearer since the 70's and previously used the Acuvue Advanced until Dec 2008 when I was given the Acuvue Oasys at my drs recommendation. I havent had any problems until my last purchase in May 2009 when I started having red weepy swollen itchy eyes and soreness and blury vision and light sensitivity. I went to the opthamologist and was given antibiotics which didnt help, then steroids, which havent helped and then just wetting drops which arent helping either. It is 3 months later and I am still experiencing the same problems. If there is a class action suit, I will participate too. Contact me at mompookie@hotmail.com

There is a problem with these lenses. I have worn accuvue for years but within 3 months of wearing oasys I got an eyelid infection. The Dr took me and my son off them immediately. He gave me a full refund and I went back to the Acuvue 2 lens without problem. They obviously did not do enough research and development. They also just laid off 10% of their workforce in Jacksonville, FL. Don't use this product. Go back to another tried and true Acuvue lens.

I started trying out the acuvue oasys less than a week ago. At first, they seemed to be more comfortable, and I was generally happy. Last night however, I accidentally fell asleep without taking them out. I woke up at 3am to extreme pain mainly in my right eye. Upon examination, my eyes were both severely bloodshot (more so in my right eye). My eyes were also full of discharge. After removing the contacts, my eyes continued to weep and hurt. It has been 6 hours and my eyes are just now starting to feel better, and the redness is gradually going away. I am a pilot, and because of this I was unable to work today. I am NOT happy!

I have been wearing Oasys for about a year now. At least once a month, my eyes start to itch and swell practically shut. The skin around the eye appears discolored -- almost bruised -- and the puffiness extends under the eye -- looks like a big bag. It takes several days of not wearing contacts for my eye to return to normal. The last time this happened, I went to the eye doctor and he thought it was caused by the pores around the eye getting clogged. After reading this website, I'm almost convinced that I am allergic to the Oasys.

I can't believe so many others have had the same symptoms I do! My optometrist switched me to Oasys about a year ago. I'd never had a serious problem until this June,2009. Every couple of weeks after taking out the contacts my eye will sting, turn red, water for about a day, and become extremely sensitive to light. The pain is beyond distracting. I was told by a doctor I had dry eyes, but the drops do nothing to help. It is such a relief to know that there is a reason. I can't believe this product is still being sold.

I'm so glad to have found this site. I switched to Acuvue Oasys in late April 2009 after decades of using Acuvue but was told Acuvue 8.8 has been discontinued and eye dr recommended either Acuvue 2 or Oasys. I chose Oasys since the dr told me it was designed to deliver more oxygen to the eye thereby more comfort. Trial pair for 2 weeks and felt fine. I ordered them and began wearing them regularly beginning in mid May. By mid June, I started noticing my eyelids were bright red, puffy, and I developed blisters (looked like deep peeling burns) under both eyes and eyelids. Coincidentally, I was on some antibiotics for dental work in May so I attributed the skin reactions to the antibiotics. However, here we are in September 2009 and I've stopped the antibiotics in July and my eyelids as well as my face and around the mouth are red, dry, with burning sensation, and peeling horribly. Finally, after much detective work in tracking what new substance I could possibly be exposed to in my daily life, I remembered that I switched to Oasys. I googled allergic reaction to Acuvue Oasys and came across all these similar problems people have been experiencing due to the silicone. I'm going to wear glasses for the next few weeks to see if my eyelids and facial skin improves. If so, then mystery finally solved with the help of all your postings. If anyone knows of some topical cream relief for my badly blistered face and eye area, please advise. Thanks and be well.

I've been using the contacts for a while now and I don't have the symptoms you guys are talking about but for the last 3 years I have had undiagnosed headaches in my sinuses. I've had surgery to correct a deviated semptum thinking that would fix my problems but it didn't. I was wondering if anyone else is having sinus related headaches that also use Acuvue products.

I've always had acuvue contacts, and they were great. I purchased the Oasys when they came out since I'd been wearing whatever was the most recent acuvue contact since I was 11 (I'm now 23). My eyes were dry and itchy, and always red if I wore my contacts more that 4 hours a day. Also, the redness would not go away until after at least one full day of glasses wearing. I could not wear them daily as I had been used to since I started wearing contacts 8-9 years previously. It was terrible. My eye doctor told me I was likely somewhat allergic to this new, awesome "hydroclear" technology. I then wore Proclear and all my problems went away! I was ecstatic.
Now, I switch to a new doctor to save money with my new insurance and I ask for any contacts except the Oasys since I had problems in the past, and this store did not carry Proclear. I go to pick up my trial contacts 3 days later since my prescription is sooooo horrible (-6.5) that they don't keep trial this strong in stock and they hand over Oasys. I tell them I had told the optometrist I had problems with these in the past and would like to have a different type of lens. They bring me out Acuvue advance with hydroclear 5 min later. Apparently they just keep these in the back of the store.
Anyways I just took the pair, so I can go back for my lens fitting, and have them hand over my contacts prescription. (to this point they only gave me my glasses prescription and have been holding on to my contacts prescription until my one week check) Can't wait to have this hydroclear technology out of my eyes, and I can order my Proclear lenses online!

I cannot believe Oasys is still on the market after hearing these comments over the years. Doctors must be getting extra benefits from Acuvue not to mention these habitual complaints from patients. I switched to Oasys in Feb & went to the eye doc almost 2-3 per month with problems...allergies; infections; tired, swelled, & gunky eyes. I was prescribed Pataday & Elestat because apparently I had "developed" allergies spontaneously. I moved after 4 months and avoided the eye doc since i had the drops. It's gotten worse, and I wear my glasses all the time now. When I do wear my contacts, my eye blows up with redness, dryness, iritation, etc even with allergy drops & rewetting drops. I can't believe I am finally reading about everyone else's problems. Definitely think silicone is not something to be putting in your eye. Hope something is being done by this.

I have been wearing contacts for 39 years and have never had problems like the ones I had with these lenses. Discomfort, burning, gunk in my eyes, blurred vision. The dangerous part is that at first they feel sooo comfortable that when the problems start you don't suspect the lenses and keep trying to wear them while they are damaging your eyes. All patients should be warned to remove them at the first sign of irritation. I only wore them for a "trial period" and luckily started having problems before I ordered a supply. I am now hoping my eyes stop burning so I can go back to my old lenses.

At doctor's suggestion, switched to Oasys this year. Mostly the left eye reacted with itchiness and gunk. Complained constantly but was told they were fine, but that I probably wasn't cleaning them well enough, and that just because they are "2 week lens" doesn't mean I can keep them in the whole 2 weeks at a time. (here's where I admit my dirty secret: with the old lens, they stayed in for months until they were finally unbearably dirty, then I changed them.) They also recommended Refresh solution, but this last time I went to complain, stressed that even though it's a no rub solution, I have to rub the lens in the solution for at least 20 seconds and then store them. Apparently the new material is better for your eyes but it also gets dirty much faster. So I'm trying not to keep them on more than 4 days in a row -- usually every other day I'll take them out and clean them properly. See what happens. Also, one time I took a brank new lens out of the package and there was a tear already. what a waste of money! I did have to tug at it to release it from the container... so I will remember to swish the thing a bit to ensure the whole lens is loose. Yikes! Such headaches for "better" lenses! I keep asking to return to my old lens but they refuse.

I have been on Acuvue 2's for the past 5 years with no issues. I was told in Jan this year by an optometrist that Acuvue 2's were being phased out and I needed to now go on Oasys.
Gave them a go and they were ok – for a while. I was never the most diligent with cleaning my lenses, but never had any problems with acuvue2’s. However the Oasys are apparently susceptible to a lot more bacteria
being stuck to them due to the lenses being much more porous and a different material – so require a lot more up keep.
So 6 months later after using the new Oasys lenses they have finally caught up with my casual cleaning ways and I have nasty eye infection in my left eye. Went to a new optometrist today and she informed me that a lot of people she has been seeing have been experiencing issues with the oasys (infections, sore eyes). I have a small allergy (little bumps) under my eye lid which is a from the silicon and an infection as well.
She also told me that Acuvue2’s were not being phased out and they were still available. Turns out my last optometrist was “wrong” (no doubt being given a little sweetener to push patients on to Oasys – the bitch).
Anyway my personal opinion. Stay away from Oasys lenses.

I have been wearing contacts for 15 years and never had a problem until this past year. I tried Oasys about 1 year ago, and it just so happened to be around the same time that I moved to Texas. Within a couple months, I developed severe eye irritation. Dr's thought it was allergy to a solution or allergies from moving to a new region. 3 months of irritation later, I moved back to Alabama and was still having problems. I was told I had a virus infection and I could not wear contacts anymore. I was referred to a cornea specialist and there was told I had a rare syndrome that affected young females that could be linked to herpes virus. He thought it could go away by itself but mentioned that I may not be able to wear contacts ever again.
Since then I wear glasses everyday and have no problems, but I would really like to wear contacts again. Every now and then I put in a new pair of Oasys and with-in a day develop the same symptoms that I started out with: puffy, red, irritated, watery, light sensitive eyes.
I really feel like it is the Oasys contacts, and I am going to try go back to my original brand. Hope it works!!! Thanks for all the post.

I've been wearing contact lenses since I was 14 years old without any problems, ever, and now I'm 27. When I was in my 'teens, I used to often even sleep in my lenses, though I wouldn't do that now because its irresponsible; yet even that caused me no problems. In November 2009, My doctor recommended that I switch to Oasys at the last visit because they are a cutting-edge lens. I've had red eyes ever since. I'll be switching back. These people ought to be ashamed. I understand that for many wearers they cause no problems. But there should, at the very least, be a warning which comes with every new prescription. From all indicators, these are the most problematic brand on the market. Google tells the story, whilst Acuvue and your optometrist make no mention of the adverse possibilities. Anything for a buck I guess, even permanently damaging 1 out of 1,000 people's corneas.

I wish I would have Googled "allergic to contacts" two years ago. This was the first hit on that search and my brand of contacts was in the title!!! I have been using the Oasys contacts since 2006 or so but have only had issues with them for about the last two years. I was using Acuvue 2's prior to these with no problem but was switched because they (Oasys) are "better for your eyes". I have seen my optometrist 3 or 4 times in the last 2 or 3 years complaining of eye irritation/crusting and have been placed on Vigamox a few times and am right now on a steroid drop to treat my eyes. He said there were "bumps" on the inside of my eyelids that were an allergic reaction. Previously, I was told this might be a seasonal issue but this past weekend when I saw him, he said the contacts might be the culprit, so I Googled it- wish I would have done it sooner (not that the internet is the ideal place to research). After I read the first dozen comments on here I immediately called my optometrists office and asked to get a pair of Acuvue 2's to get these damn things out of my eyes!! Just waiting for the call back. Thank you everyone for all of your posts!! I hope to be back in Acuvue 2's again soon, hopefully that will help me.

I've wore contacts since I was 13, and was switched to Oasys back at the first of last year. Normally my insurance covered enough contacts to last 6 months or more when I used Acuview 2's, but within 2 months of the oasys I was burning through them fast. They would cloud up get sticky as hell, and my left eye stayed red. My last pair of that set went in last June and scratched my left eye. I went back in October for more lenses and immediately had the same problems. Right before Christmas they scratched my left eye again, except now after Lotemax, Prednisolone, Gentamicin drops it still hurts, burns, waters, and now I am horribly sensitive to lights, especially sunlight. I can't drive and even have to keep my eyes closed riding in a car. If I have permanent damage I will be harrassing J & J daily.

I've had permanent damage from the Acuvue Oasys and have been suffering for almost 1 yr. My eyes are still permantly red and dry. I've been to dozens of appts with optomologists and optomotrists and am so upset. I'm so angry there was no warning label that some ppl may have severe allergic reactions esp.since ppl were complaining since 2006-07. Obviously they had to be aware of this. If only they informed the dr's prescribing these lenses about the potential dangers, maybe we could have figured this out sooner. I, like many have worn contacts 20 yrs with zero problems! I didn't have problems with these lenses till months of wear so I never imagined it could be the contacts. If you are interested in a class action lawsuit, please email me your info and problems you've had with the Oasys. If I get enough responses, I will personally go see a class action lawyer to see if anything can be done! Email me at oasysclassaction@yahoo.com

Hmmm, same thing. I wore Acuvue for several years and switched to Oasys about a year ago because of the increased oxygen flow. The felt really good for the longest time. But, about 2 months ago I started to get the redness that everyone else is talking about and nothing really helped prescriptionwise. The question I have is, Has anyone switched back to the Acuvue 2 or previous contact type and have the redness go away?

After coming across this site, I feel very stupid!! I've been wearing Oasys contact lenses for about a year. Within that year, I've had over ten problems with my eyes. I've always blamed these on falling asleep in the daytime as well as the night, which i thought could have maybe caused extra irritation, or me leaving them in too long. Today, I woke up with an incredibly uncomfortable, sore, completely red, swollen, tearing to death left eye. At other times when this happened, friends would tell me to simply remove the lens, but i claimed that my eye was more irritable and watered far more when the lens was out, so just better to replace with a new one and sit it out. my eye would then sort it outself the same day. I know how stupid this seems, but i don't think many people are willing to believe these contact lenses alone could be dangerous to our eyes, and cause problems like i've been having. But having read all these comments, I'm really hoping other people will have an eye opener to these contact lenses too and the majority of people either with allergies to the silicon, or just a reaction to the lens itself.

ok, so I have had problems w/my eyes for months now. My eye lids get red, swollen, and itchy, then the skin peels off and it hurts. I have allergies to several things and first stopped taking my synthroid meds thinking maybe a new dye was added, then I spent weeks at the allergist going thru all the testing again and adjusting the foods I eat. I just happened to look in my medicine cabinet and looked at the box of contacts and was thinking, hey, I got these right around when my eyes started itching and swelling! I googled "problems w/accuview oasys" and look where I ended up!!! I am calling the eye dr tomorrow and going back to my old lenses TOMORROW!!!!!!

I just gave up trying to wear the Acuvue Oasys lenses! I've been wearing Acuvue 2's forever and noticed that my eyes were dry at times. During my recent eye exam I asked my physican about the Oasys lenses and they gave me a trial pair to wear for a week and then return for a follow up to see how my eyes looked. Well, I never made it a week! I wore the lenses for 3 days and my eyes were itching, dry and felt gritty all day long. I thought perhaps I'd gotten make up or something on them, so I got another trial pair. Nope! It was definitely the lenses! When I told the nurse that I thought I was allergic to them, she said she hadn't seen anyone else with that reaction I will definitely refer her to this sight. I returned to wearing my Acuvue 2 lenses and my eyes feel much better.

I have many of the same problems since my Optometrist at Costco suggested I try Oasis. Although I don't experience itching or problems the next morning, my eyes get irritated (red) after less than 2 hours wearing them. In general though I can't have them on for more than 3 or 4 hours- They are too heavy and thick and my eye just wont take them. They start moving around the eye and dry up in about half an hour after putting them on. I've worn several brands of contacts in over 10 years and truly I have never experienced anything like this. I want my money back!

Like many of you here, I'm so glad I found these comments. I have had nothing but problems with my eyes since I tried out the Accuvue Oasys lenses. I have worn contacts for over 25 years and have been wearing Acuvues since about 1986. A few weeks ago, I tried out the Acuvue Oasys for Astigmatism - what a disaster.
They gave me two pairs, which was a good thing because by the 5th day of wearing them, the right lens had a huge protein deposit right in the middle of it that I could not remove, even with vigorous rubbing. It was at this time that I also noticed my eyes were getting a little red. By day 10, the whites of my eyes were extremely red and irritated. So I stopped wearing them and went back to my regular Acuvues.
At my 2 week check, the eye doctor told me to give my eyes a break for a week, then put them in Monday morning and come see him Monday afternoon. He thought maybe it was something else going on with my eye, not related to the contacts.
Well, I put the lenses back in this past Monday at 6:30 am and by noon, both my eyes were totally bloodshot. I finally had to take them out because my eyes were so irritated. When I got to the eye doctor, he thought at first maybe it was a problem with the solution, but I told him that was impossible because I've been using the same solution for several years. He concluded that the lenses were "toxic" to my eyes.
That was 5 days ago and my eyes are still somewhat red and irritated.
I'd advise anyone considering these lenses to think twice before switching and to remove them at the first sign, even the first inkling that something is not right.

I used Acuvue with NO problems for many many years. In fact,I wore them in my art studio around lots of dust and NEVER had a problem. My eye doc. in LA gave me a trial pair of Oasys and I absolutely hated them,my eyes immediately got irritated and teary. YUCK!
Stayed with Acuve 2..moved to the midwest and the eye doc. here told me Acuvue 2 is being discontinued and that oasys is the way to go. HUH?? I told him that i had tried them and they were horrible. Long story short, he convinced me to try again , the Oasys are more expensive than the acuvue 2 BTW. Again, I hate them!!! my eyes can only take about and hour and then start itching and feeling goopy. What a waste. I hope Acuvue 2 IS still available.

I've just been 'fired' by my contact lens fitter today. I thought he was convinced I was just being ornery, but I wonder if he knows the problems with these silicone lenses. I am shocked and saddened at the pain people have been through, and the loss of vision some have suffered is truly a travesty. I will contact the oasysclassaction@yahoo.com person, and I hope others do, too. These contacts are dangerous! Saving a couple of hundred dollars is not worth permanent vision loss; complain, bring them back, demand your money back, and POST! to make sure this doesn't happen to other people. The only thing that will raise awareness is visibility....and that's what we're trying to protect.

I wore Acuvue Oasys for more than 2 years and loved them. They were the most comfortable contacts I had ever experienced. Then, in November of 2009 I started having severe dryness, sensitivy to light and swollen, red corneas and finally loss of almost all vision in my right eye! I went to 3 specialists and no-one was able to diagnose my problem. I did some research online and came across all of these posts. I stopped wearing the Oasys and my vision started improving almost immediately. I have since switched to a different lens and do not have problems. Yesterday I decided to try the Oasys one more time. In less than one hour my vision was blurry and my right eye was red & swollen. They definitely need to have a warning about possible severe allergies on these contacts!!!

i wore contacts from 15-18 no problem, i was then started on the purevision torics, which are also made of simalar material, my eyes started getting droopy, discharge, sensitive to light, my optomotrist simply told me to take a break from contacts, just wear my glasses more often. Told me i was wearing the best lenses for me and nothing would make it better. Ive now gone an entire year wearing glasses, my eyes are always dry and sensitive to light, quality of life is definitley affected by this. Trips to my family doctor and opthamalogists, finally about a week ago after seeing another specialist, ive been prescribed some steroid drops and it seems to be clearing things up a bit for me

I haven't worn contacts for 30 years due to dry eyes. My Optometrist gave me Acuvue Oasys to try about 3 weeks ago. At first, they felt fine. But this week, I've had the same extreme itching & redness problems reported and began searching for others with the same problem. Shocked at the long list of people!!! I too am glad to discover this site. Thanks for sharing your experiences - will help many people.

Oh Lord! I have been on OASYS for about three years now and was switched to them because the contacts I had worn previously would always get dry. But now I'm thinking I could deal with the dryness, after all the problems I had with OASYS. Some days are perfectly fine, but others I can hardly open my eyes. I experience extreme sensitivity to light, pain as if there is something in my eye, soreness in the muscle, watering non stop, and blurred vision. I'm so glad I found this...no one else understands how bad these eye infections hurt!!!! Ugh. Deffinitely calling my doctor.

I use Acuvue Oasys. The past year I have also had severe eye issues; blepharitus, dry, itchy, scarring, red, all sorts of irritation. Went to 2 doctors several times, got all sorts of drops, antibiotics. They were temp solutions and I wore glasses only for about 3 months. Put these god forsaken Oasys lenses back in, and I get irritation all over again. I used a different brand before with zero problems..I forget which one. After reading everyones comments, I am convinced it is the Senofilcon A in the material that causes all these issues. I have an appointment tomorrow and cannot wait to try a different brand.

So glad to read this site. I've just finished a trial week in Oasys but actually only wore them for about 5 days. Previously I wore Acuvue Advanced and had no problems. The technician acted like my complaints of my eyes feeling like they were smothering, eyes getting extremely tired and eyes itching, were crazy since I said the lens initially would feel fine on my eyes. The dr. however advised that I may just be allergic to something on the lens. I'm glad to read other posts that have had the same problem. Thank goodness I had a dr. who would listen well.

I started to wear oasys july 15 2008 and by the 18th my eyes started to burn and turn red. I thought it was because i was tired so i went to sleep that night hoping it would get better. When i woke up the next morning my eyes were glued shut and they were heurting. My mom had to rush me to the emergency room. They told me i had a corneal abrasion . Since them i havent been able to wear contacts because i did not know what the problem was. I've been through so much pain do to those contacts. Is there a lawsuit against oasys that i can join?

I have had many of the same problems with Oasys that others here have mentioned: heavy "glue-like" deposits, severe itchiness, eye redness, and lens that seem too stiff to sit properly on my eyes. I had been an Acuvue user and had no prior problems and I switched back to Acuvue 2 with minimal problems. My new eye doctor is pushing silicone hydrogels as well and I'm currently test driving a few new lens (Ciba, Cooper). Still observing the same problems as the Oasys, but at a much lower intensity.

I was just given a pair of the Oasys about 2 weeks ago and I have had the same problems. The first couple hours they felt good, but then my eyes got so swollen, red, itchy and my vision was blurring. I had to take them out. I went back to my eye doctor and was told that I could be allergic to the silicone in these lenses. He ordered me a different brand w/o silicone, but when I put them in within an hour my eyes were swollen and red again. I had Acuvue 2 for years and had zero problems. I have been wearing Oasys for a year or so but the other night I felt discomfort in my eye so I swapped out lenses. Went to sleep but not for long since I was up at 5 am writhing in pain and not being able to open that eye. Went to an MD who stated I had a Corneal Ulcer from wearing contacts....so when I start Googling "Corneal Ulcer Contacts" I find this forum at the forefront of the results. Everyone in here has had a problem with these contacts (with minor exceptions). I have to believe in that since there is no forum like this for Acuvue 2 that we are being collectively pinched by Acuvue and Optometrists alike that are pushing an unwanted and unsafe product on us. Reading these comments has convinced me that Johnson and Johnson has developed this product to switch all of us successful Acuvue 2 lense wearers ( I have been successful with mine for 15+ years)to a more expensive and less durable product so they can sell more lenses and make more money! My main complaints about the Oasys is that they tear and degrade much quicker and more easily than the Acuvue 2 and they are not nearly as pliable making them more difficult to handle, clean and get in and out of my eye. I\'m switching back to Acuvue 2 after 3 month test. PU!!!!!

I have been wearing acuvue 2 for about 8 years and then my doctor changed my prescription to Oaysis. I like them pretty well, only I'm having a problem. I wear my contact lenses for longer than I'm supposed to because I simply don't have the money to go to the eye doctor every year. I've noticed that if I wear my lenses for longer than 2 months they start getting these tiny tiny indents/ spots in the lens which make them very difficult to see out of, and they are irritating my eyes. I know I need to switch contacts, and that's where my problem is starting but I would like to know WHAT my contacts are DOING. Can anyone help?

The Acuvue Oasys contact brand also gave me a series of cornea ulcers/eye infections. I had to make about 6 doctors appointments because of discomfort in the eyes, only to be informed that I had scars on my corneas because of the infections. I'm now limited to contact use with the Acuvue Oasys, but not for long.. I'm changing brands ASAP. With so many complaints and infections you would think somebody would recall this brand or make sure drastic measures were taken to prevent this trouble for so many people.

Ever since then, I have had itchy bloodshot eyes and painful burning when I wear Acuvue Oasys. I can't even put the contacts in for half an hour without this happening. I also have mucus in my eyes when I wake up in the morning after wearing them. I thought maybe my eyes were just too sensitive to wear contacts, but I'm definitely changing brands.

I am amazed that doctors seem to be so calloused to the problems their patients are having, and keep pushing the Oasys lenses! Like many posts I have read here today, I wore contacts successfully for years, with no problems. Like several others, I also could wear them past their "expiration time" for 12 hours or more per day. Since I was switched to Oasys, even ONE hour of wear leaves my eyes red for a day! I have got to find a source of "good contacts" again. It is driving me crazy to wear my glasses all the time.

I have been wearing contact lenses for 30 years without a single problem. I decided to switch from Acuvue 2 lenses to the Oaysis ones because Costco doesn't regularly stock the 2's anymore. I switched in April and have been diagnosed with two corneal ulcers in my left eye. My right one has started to hurt and both aeyes are very sensitive. I will not even consider putting these lenses back in my eyes, Is this the same sort of silicone implicated in complications with breast implants some years back? I am sad because corneal ulcers cause scar ulcers were not in my field of vision, but I am truly concerned and would like more research done. Also, I fear that they may stop making Acuvue 2/s which incidentally have a higher water content, go figure.

NOW, BECAUSE OF SPECIAL BRAVERY, I AM WEARING THE "NEW AND IMPROVED ACUVUE TRUEYE LENSES WITH HYDRACLEAR1"...I HOPE THEY HAVE DRAMATICALLY IMPROVED THE CHEMICAL CONTENT OF THE HYDRACLEAR BECAUSE UNFORTUNATELY, THIS IS THE ONLY HALF-TOLERABLE BRAND OF CONTACT LENSES THAT ARE ACTUALLY WEARABLE. = (

I have worn the Acuvue oasys lenses for several years and have just started having trouble with them. My daughter is having trouble, also. It seems to be worse during the beginning of the month than at the end of the month of wear. I started wondering if they changed the formula for the solution that they are packaged in. I also had blurred vision, odd feeling in the eyes (like the lens is welded to my eye) and crusty eyes in the morning. I find that if I take them out every night for the first week and soak them in my regular 'wetting' solution, I don't have trouble the rest of the month. I am thinking of 'presoaking' the lens before I put it in to see if that would help.

Now I am having all kinds of issues and am extremely worried b/c I can not afford a ulcer or infection, anything could cause more scarring and compromise my vision. I am in tears, going to dr. first thing monday and demand she take me off of these immediately, check my eyes and then I am going to specilty surgeon on Thursday...which was already planned to check scarring. I hope and pray I am ok and I want to sue the pants off of J&J....Why are they still selling these, there needs to be a recall NOW.

I got switched maybe 4 years ago, and I had a bad feeling about them back then, because I got white stuff in my eyes that I never got before. But the eye doctor just insisted these were better. So, against my better judgement, I kept wearing them anyway. So now... I'm searching the internet for "oasys contacts problems". I will be making an appointment with a new eye doctor tomorrow.

I too am having problems. I thought it was due to the high pollen count, but I know now it is the lenses. Switching back to the proclears asap.

Have started to experience problems with Acuvue Advance - been wearting for about a year but symptons sound the same as for Acuvue Oasys - dry sticky eyes, headaches and about 4 days of wear. Switched to Biofinity - couldn't believe I'd put up with the Acuvue for so long. Not happy.
