Periodontal Diseases Can Worsen Pre-Diabetes Symptoms
Filed in archive Cases , Studies on March 23, 2007
A condition in which blood glucose levels are higher than normal but not high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes is called pre-diabetes.
Danish researchers found that periodontal diseases (diseases of the gum) could be a contributing factor to the progression of pre-diabetes.
According to Dr. Carla Pontes Andersen, Department of Periodontology at the University of Copenhagen;
"This study found that having periodontal diseases can alter the metabolic conditions which would probably lead to the progression to pre-diabetic characteristics and Type 2 diabetes."
These findings, which appeared in the March issue of the Journal of Periodontology reiterate the importance of taking care of teeth and gum health.

This study utilized mice not human subjects. Mice dont brush their teeth and periodontal disease prevention is a self-care mechanism. Lack of self-care efficacy is a risk factor for the development of metabolic syndrome, pre-diabetes, and diabetes. also mice cannot brush and floss their teeth.
