Osteoarthritis and Cosequin DS
Filed in archive Arthritis , Did you know on March 8, 2010
Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis usually affecting the joints of the hands, knees, hips or spine. The breakdown of cartilage, which serves as a "cushion" between the bones of the joints, causes pain and swelling and reduces mobility. While most cases of osteoarthritis are related to aging, there are many other factors and health conditions that may contribute to the development of osteoarthritis such as obesity, diabetes, joint injury, and hormone disorders.
There is no specific treatment to stop cartilage degeneration or to repair damaged cartilage in osteoarthritis. Some patients do benefit from conservative measures such as rest, exercise, diet control with weight reduction, physical and occupational therapy, and mechanical support devices. In terms of medication, only pain relievers and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are often prescribed, and there are studies that suggesting that an alternative treatment with the food supplements glucosamine and chondroitin (Cosequin DS) can relieve symptoms of pain and stiffness for some people with osteoarthritis. Note, however that these supplements are not regulated as stringently by the FDA.
