Omega-3 Enriched Milk, May Protect Against Metabolic Syndrome
Filed in archive Treatment on June 12, 2006
According to Spanish researchers, supplementing the diet with an omega-3 enriched milk may be a simple and tolerable way of easing cardiovascular risk factors linked to metabolic syndrome.
Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a condition characterized by central obesity, hypertension, and disturbed glucose and insulin metabolism. This syndrome has been linked in previous studies to increased risks of both type 2 diabetes and CVD.
The reason that such an enriched milk appears to benefit people with MetS is the combination of nutrients, say the researchers: "High intakes of omega-3 and omega-9 PUFAs, folic acid, and vitamin E, are important characteristics of the Mediterranean diet, so that the enrichment of milk with these nutrients allows approaching the diets of our patients to the Mediterranean diet."
The enriched milk used in the study was supplied by Covap and contained omega-3 fatty acids EPA.
