Although some doubts have been cast on the power of the omega-3 fats, it is still advised to include this in your daily diet while we've been advised to cut down on the omega-6's because it is the culprit to some serious diseases.
Vitamin E, the most powerful of antioxidants
have been sending mixed signals as shown in earlier studies.Individual functions may be unclear but combined could be real powerful.
According to a recent research study from the Netherlands, the combination of these three: omega-3's, omega-6's and vitamin E in one's diet can lower the risk of motor neurone disease (MND) by 60% percent.
The mechanism, say the researchers, is more than just the nutrients' individual benefits. The omega-3 fatty acid, alpha-linoleic acid, for example, has been reported to protect neurones. Docosahexaenioc acid (DHA) is involved in the membrane of ion channels in the brain, making it easier for them to change shape and transit electrical signals. Vitamin E, say the scientists, inhibits lipid peroxidation which leads to oxidative stress.
Looking at these nutrients' protective activity, it is a case of the sum being greater than the parts.
This new study is published online at the Journal of Neurology which reports that a diet rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids (omega-3 and omega-6) and vitamin E could reduce the risk of developing MND.
