OlivActiv, New Ingredient for Functional Foods and Drinks
Filed in archive Studies on May 16, 2006
OlivActiv, a high potency low-bitterness antioxidant ingredient derived from Spanish olives that is being marketed for immune system activation has been recently launched by Glanbia Nutritionals.
The Irish company, Glanbia Nutritionals, collaborated with a Spanish Developer Genosa to bring OlivActiv to the market, whose competitive advantage lies in its high phenol-hydroxytyrosol content - 35 per cent, so that a 20mg dose contains 7mg of the antioxidant.
OlivActiv also contains low levels of oleuropein, the element that can cause bitterness in olive leaf extracts which may cause problems for formulators wanting to ensure that their product tastes good.
Glanbia is working on clinical programs that will ensure the potency of the product and looking on ways for the ingredient to be used in a variety of food products, including functional beverages, yoghurts and bars.
OlivActiv is one ingredient to watch out for soon in your food product labels.
