In a study that involved 264 women, it was found out that increased levels of lycopene in the blood resulted in decreased stiffness of the arteries thereby may play an important role in the early stage of atherosclerosis - the hardening of the arteries due to deposits of fatty substances, cholesterol, cellular waste products, calcium and other substances build up in the inner lining of an artery.
Published in the journal Atherosclerosis, the study findings suggest that increased levels of lycopene in the heart can lead to healthier blood vessels.
