Laser Eye Surgery is Safe, Experts Say

According to the results of a 10-year study presented recently at the Academy of Ophthalmology's 2006 Joint Meeting, both LASIK and PRK eye procedures are safe and effective.
LASIK refers to the use of a laser to reshape the cornea without working directly on the outer surface of the cornea. PRK (or Photorefractive Keratectomy) also uses a laser to reshape the cornea but by working directly on the outer surface of the cornea.
According to lead investigator Jorge L. Alio, MD, PhD, chair of ophthalmology at the Universidad Miguel Hernandez in alicante, Spain and medical director of VISSUM:
"Our study provides a clear answer to those who doubt LASIK's reliability, showing that both LASIK and PRK are effective for correcting myopia with no long term complications."
The said study included 100 eyes with myopia or myopic astigmatism corrected by LASIK and 100 eyes corrected by PRK surgery and measured how well the patients maintained the ability to focus, as well as any changes in visual distortion 10 years after surgery.

LASEK and PRK are both great technologies. I've heard, though, that PRK is a bit rougher. Is that true?

I'm happy that science is improving and able to help people with their problems. What i find ironic is that our problems are the result of the environment we live in. Stress and other factors that our society should fight are the cause of all these problems. Yet there are mechanisms which can "cure" our problems. Why not go to the root of all things ?

It's not, statistically speaking, a very informative PR. Would be nice if they gave us an idea of errors rates or reported problems. It seems a little fluffy.

No surgery is ever 'completely safe'.However the incidences of serious complications are normally quite low.
