Hemp: The Hot New Healthy Ingredient?
Filed in archive Studies on July 15, 2006
Last month, the health-enhancing properties of hemp were in the spotlight in lieu of the launching of a drink containing hemp-blossom syrup (Cannabis sativa) in the UK.
Developed by Austrian company Thurella and launched by distributor Seagull, the drink called C-Ice contains no THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, chemical responsible for the psychotropic effects of marijuana) though it contains the words 'sweet cannabis tea' in its package label.
C-Ice, a natural immune enhancer (containing protein, omega oils, amino acids, enzymes, vitamins and minerals - in addition to the antioxidant properties of the black tea) was tested in multiple sclerosis patients for it potential to alleviate lag pain and spasms.
For the last three months, members of the Milton Keynes Multiple Sclerosis Therapy Group have been drinking two 250ml servings of C-Ice each day. Kohli said that 69 to 75 per cent of participants have reported help with symptoms - although she said that some of this might be due to their expectations. Details of the study design were not available.
Watch out, hemp could be the next healthy ingredient.
