Five Common Medication Errors To Avoid

Avoid the following errors many people make:
1. Not reading the label. This is mostly true for people who buy over the counter. They don't check what they are buying has ingredients to which they are allergic, or if the drug interacts harmfully with other medications.
2. Using sedatives during a heartburn. People who take benzodiazepines like Valium, Xanax, and Halcion are 50 percent more likely to suffer a heartburn at night than those who do not. These prescription antianxiety drugs loosen up the lower esophageal sphincter, usually resulting in a heart burn.
3. Using an antidiarrheal during a fever. Do not take a diarrhea remedy if you also have a fever or if there's blood or mucus in your bowel movements. You should call your doctor immediately.
4. Taking aspirin without checking with the doctor. Aspirin can cause stomach bleeding. Doctors usually advise it only if you have an increased risk of heart attack and stroke. Women do not gain as much from aspirin therapy as men. And there are people who are resistant to aspirin's anticlotting effects.
