Move Over morning-after pill! Ellaâ„¢ just got approval from the US FDA for emergency contraception.

Ellaâ„¢ (ulipristal acetate) has been available in Europe for a year before it got to the US market. Ellaâ„¢ works by inhibiting or delaying ovulation by interfering with the effects of the female hormone progesterone -- which stimulates ovulation.

According to the US FDA:

"Ellaâ„¢ successfully prevents pregnancy when taken orally within 120 hours (five days) after a contraceptive failure or unprotected intercourse. It is not intended for routine use as a contraceptive."

Requiring a prescription, Ellaâ„¢ is designed for use within five days after a contraceptive failure or unprotected intercourse.

Manufactured by French firm HRA Pharma, and known in Europe as ellaOne, will be distributed in the US by Watson Pharmaceuticals Inc. of Morristown, New Jersey.
