© me and the sysopDrug prescriptions of first generation antidepressants work by helping the body raise levels of neurotransmitter compounds as serotonin, norepinephrine, dopamine and others. However, undesirable side effects can vary from constipation, dry mouth, drowsiness to hypotension (low blood pressure). The second generation antidepressants (includes Prozac and Zoloft) have minor side effects but takes a long time to be effective and often do not help the patients who need them.
The drug Cymbalta (product of Eli Lilly) is a prototype third generation antidepressant that balances the body's chemistry with fewer side effects and maximum and immediate efficacy. So far in the market today, Cymbalta is the best antidepressant available. However, Chemists at Oregon State University (OSU) have synthesized a new compound that can rival the best antidepressants (yes, even Cymbalta) as it is better in balancing the body's chemistry without the side effects.
The OSU Researchers claim that their newly synthesized antidepressant comes close to the perfect antidepressant. But then more research and human clinical trials are necessary before this perfect antidepressant hit the market. That is surely something good to look forward to.
