CSA-54: the chemical that blocks HIV infection
Filed in archive News , Studies , Treatment on February 11, 2006

laboratory tests at the Vanderbilt University show that the chemical CSA-54 disables HIV's ability to infect cells. Instead, it attacks the membrane of the virus to prevent it from locking on to the cells.
Experts agreed that the study was an interesting development because most HIV treatments attack the virus when it has already infected a cell. However, they warned that it is still very early test tube research and is many years away from clinical trials. Human trials are still necessary before knowing the true value of CSA-54.
