Chronic Ear Infections Linked To Increased Obesity

Filed in archive Kid's Health , Obesity , Studies , Viruses and Viral Infection on August 15, 2008

Presented earlier this week at the still on-going American Psychological Association's 116th Annual Convention (Boston) are the study findings that chronic ear infection or otitis media in children could be linked to the preference for fatty foods - thereby increasing their risk of being overweight.

The said findings found a strong link between localized taste damage (resulting from chronic middle ear infections or otitis media) and an increased preference for high-fat foods.

The findings showed that those with a moderate to severe history of otitis media were 62 percent more likely to be obese.

John Hayes of Brown University and his collaborators at the university of connecticut found associations between otitis media exposure, taste, food choice and obesity.

Epidemiologist Kathleen Daly of the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities said findings showed ear infections treated with tubes can also lead to higher body mass indexes in toddlers.

Otitis media is an inflammation of the middle ear area, usually following a viral infection of the nasopharyx.
