Chicago Hospital Serves Organic Food to Patients
Filed in archive Cases , Diagnostics , Treatment on November 29, 2006
The Swedish Covenant Hospital in Chicago has joined a growing menu of mainstream organizations that are embracing the organic food trend and is now serving organic food for patient meals.
Starting early June, all stewed and ground beef used in patient meals at the Swedish Covenant Hospital (including Swedish's traditional Swedish meatballs) is pure grass-fed beef, without unnatural supplements and growth hormones, from the Tall Grass Beef Company while most fruits and vegetables offered to patients at the hospital are organically grown.
According to Maria Simmons, manager of Patient Food Service and chair of the Nutrition Action Committee at Swedish Covenant Hospital:
"We viewed the introduction of more organic foods as part of a broad program aimed at providing a home-like atmosphere during a stay at our hospital. It's also a natural extension of our cultural foods menu. The feedback we've had from patients so far is extremely positive."
Organic food is not cheap for sure. Swedish Covenant Hospital in Chicago is a good example indeed which remains focused on their mission of compassionate care.

Although we like to think that hospitals serve nutritious food, it may not be a fact. A recent study done at 2 hospitals found that the quality of food served was lower than the expected standards.
