Caffeine Can Increase Risk of Miscarriage

Filed in archive Pregnancy & Child Birth , Studies , Women's Health on January 24, 2008

During pregnancy, women should stay away from caffeine (whether from coffee, tea, caffeinated soda or hot chocolate), because high doses can increase the risk of miscarriage.

And I only thought pregnant women were told to stay away from these caffeine sources because it will keep you and your awake - which could be distressing on both mother and child.

The new finding was found by the Kaiser Permanente Division of Research.

According to De-Kun Li, MD, Ph.D., an investigator with the kaiser permanente Division of Research and lead investigator of the study:

"This study strengthens the association between caffeine and miscarriage risk because it removes speculation that the association was due to reduced caffeine intake by healthy pregnant women.

The main message for pregnant women from these findings is that they probably should consider stopping caffeine consumption during pregnancy because this research provides clearer and stronger evidence that high doses of caffeine intake during pregnancy can increase the risk of miscarriage."

Well, are you somebody who can't help staying away from a caffeine fix even when pregnant? Please consider stopping the caffeine consumption, for your baby's sake.
