© freegazaorgIn the United States, there are a lot of unused medical supplies that are being discarded every year.
Hospitals are forced to discard any unused medical supplies in an opened outer package even if the remaining items are individually wrapped and sterile because of U.S. government regulations. On top of that, thousands of tons of medical supplies are discarded every day in the United States due to overproduction and procedural excess.
Non-government organizations such as the Doc to Dock program collect such unused medical supplies and deliver them to countries who need them, such as Africa.
The unused supplies are collected and then delivered to warehouses for sorting and inventorying by volunteers. Medical centers in Africa can select and order the supplies they need from that inventory. Seventeen hospitals participate directly in Doc to Dock, and the Greater New York Hospital Association, comprising nearly 300 hospitals, is a partner in the program. This way, they don't have to buy medical supplies to send to Africa.
Individuals may donate durable supplies such as new or gently used walkers, crutches, wheel chair, etc. And for every dollar donated to Doc to Doc the impact is 20 times that amount. For every $20.00 Doc to Doc deliver a box filled with medical supplies valued at $400.00.
"Doc to Dock has made the difference between life and death in many parts of Africa and in Haiti... It also delivers hope, opportunity and human dignity."
