The bush-era bans on stem cell research has been lifted by President Barack Obama this Monday - thereby allowing federal financing of medical research using stem cells from discarded human embryos.
According to President Obama:
Obama gave the National Institutes of Health 120 days to prepare guidelines on how the research will be financed and conducted.
According to President Obama:
"This order is an important step in advancing the cause of science in America.
Promoting science isn't just about providing resources. It is about letting scientists ... do their jobs, free from manipulation or coercion, and listening to what they tell us, even when it's inconvenient; especially when it's inconvenient.
It is about ensuring that scientific data is never distorted or concealed to serve a political agenda, and that we make scientific decisions based on facts, not ideology."

The U.S. had an eight year moratorium due to others preventing the advancement of this incredibly beneficial potential therapy for devastating diseases. I'm elated that research on this topic of stem cells perhaps will now accelerate.

Great post on the stem cell optimism that now exists.
Embryonic stem cells are essetially blank slates that can be manipulated into any cell involved in the development of human tissue and organs.
As a result, stem cell potential seems unlimited.
The embryonic stem cells are obtained from those frozen embryos at IVF clinics that would be disposed of otherwise. The embryos are 5 days old, and are composed of about 100 cells.
The first clinical trial accepted by the FDA occured two years ago by Geron Corporation in California- one of the 8 states that continued to fund stem cell research during the moratorium from the federal government since 2001. The clinical trial that is FDA approved will test the safety of particular stem cells designed to repair spinal cords that have been traumatized.
The diseases that are so devastating, and without effective treatment, now may be cured,

Being in a financial crisis, is it really a good time to do this?
