It's very simple. The answer to your horrible pain is a tea bag.
You can either steep it or just put it on your tooth dry, and let your saliva wet it. Keep it on your tooth for at least an hour so as to maximize the effect. The tea soothes the pain, and also will draw out the infection. If you bite the tea bag and break it, then just pop another one in.
Orange pekoe works the best.
